‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9: Why Jesse Lee Soffer Didn’t Watch the Sex Scene Between Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton
Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 9 gave fans exactly what they were hoping for all season long when it came to Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton. When Halstead learned the truth about Upton killing Roy Walton, their relationship seemed doomed to end. But Halstead and Hank Voight worked out a plan to save themselves from the FBI — and it seemed to bring Halstead and Upton closer. In episode 9, Halstead and Upton had a steamy sex scene. But Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer admitted he didn’t watch it. Here’s why.
Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton get married during the ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 fall finale
Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton got engaged at the start of Chicago P.D. Season 9 — but their relationship was rocky at the time. Halstead knew Upton was keeping secrets from him, as she stopped eating, stopped sleeping, and stopped acting like herself. Halstead eventually tracked down Hank Voight to learn the truth. Voight told Halstead everything that went down with Roy Walton, throwing Halstead into a tailspin and nearly causing the end of his relationship with Upton.
By Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 9, Halstead decided he wanted to help Voight and Upton get out of their predicament with the FBI. The FBI hoped to use Halstead to take down Voight, but Halstead refused to comply. Eventually, Halstead and Voight won — and Halstead and Upton reignited their passion for each other. At the end of the fall season finale, they eloped, and they didn’t tell anyone in the Intelligence Unit about their marriage.
“It wasn’t a big celebration because it’s just for the two of them,” Upton actor Tracy Spiridakos explained to TV Insider. “Things have been so fractured for so long between them that it was a moment for the two of them to reconnect and kind of show that they’re in this together and they’re going to move forward together.”
Jesse Lee Soffer mentioned he didn’t watch the sex scene between his character and Tracy Spiridakos
In addition to eloping, Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton ended Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 9 with an ultra-steamy sex scene. After they secretly got hitched, they headed home to passionately make love. But Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer told Us Weekly he didn’t watch the sex scene. It seems he didn’t watch because he doesn’t “have time” to sit down and watch the show.
“I don’t have time for TV, so if you tell me it was intense, then OK. It was intense,” Soffer told the publication. “We’ve been playing partners and love interests for so long, that it’s second nature.”
Soffer also noted he doesn’t have an issue making sex scenes for TV thanks to his previous experience in soap operas. With this in mind, he likely doesn’t have an issue actually watching the scenes back. “Also, I was on a soap for a while and she’s worked a ton!” he added. “It’s like, ‘All right, sex scene? Got it.'”
Given what Soffer said about not having “time” to watch TV, it seems he likely doesn’t watch Chicago P.D. at all, either. It seems his intense filming schedule with the show keeps him far too busy for him to catch up on the episodes himself.
Are Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton actors together in real life?
With their fiery on-screen chemistry, are Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton actors together in real life? Fans would love if Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos dated outside of Chicago P.D. But there’s no evidence to suggest they see each other outside of the show.
With that said, they both appear single at the moment. Spiridakos was engaged back in 2012 to Jon Cor, but they called it quits prior to the wedding. And Soffer dated Sophia Bush, a previous Chicago P.D. cast member, so it seems he’s not above dating women he works with. Perhaps the on-screen sparks will eventually wear off and make the actors fall for each other in real life.
Chicago P.D. Season 9 returns in January 2022 on NBC.
