The Chicago P.D. Season 9 premiere answered fan questions regarding Kim Burgess. Kim Burgess lived through the two gunshot wounds she endured in the Chicago P.D. Season 8 finale. Now, fans are wondering if she’ll live — and if she lives, if she’ll remain a cop. Here’s what the Chicago P.D. cast has to say about Burgess’s current situation and what we’ll observe in episode 2.

Does Kim Burgess die? She lives through the ‘Chicago P.D’ Season 9 premiere

So, does Kim Burgess die? At the end of Chicago P.D. Season 8, Burgess was taken by an assailant — and she was then shot twice in the stomach by Roy. She played dead long enough to escape to a nearby vehicle, and thankfully, she was rescued before she died. But the Chicago P.D. Season 9 premiere showed her fighting for her life in the hospital. And the doctors didn’t sound too promising in regards to her future.

The start of the Chicago P.D. new season in 2021 showed Adam Ruzek arriving at the hospital to see Burgess. Here, the doctors shared Burgess lived through the initial attack. But she may require life support going forward.

By the end of the season premiere, though, Burgess’s future seemed hopeful. Ruzek brought her daughter, Makayla, into the hospital to see her. Together, they all had a bonding moment before the end of the episode.

Is Kim Burgess leaving ‘Chicago P.D.’? She may lose ‘desire’ for the job

While it seems she lives through the attack, is Kim Burgess leaving Chicago P.D.? A One Chicago promo video on Twitter features scenes from Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 2. And it looks like Burgess is back on the job — though she’ll have to grapple with the physical and mental effects of getting shot twice.

“If you’re not OK, that’s OK,” Ruzek tells Burgess.

To that, she seems to answer, “You want to push me into a desk job?”

Additionally, Burgess actor Marina Squerciati talked to TVLine about Burgess’s future with Intelligence. “I don’t think she really knows yet what she is going to do,” Squerciati explains.

Hank Voight actor Jason Beghe also talked about Burgess’s future with the P.D. “But yeah, I think mostly in the second episode, she starts to deal with it,” he told TV Insider. “She’s eventually gonna heal from the physical wounds, but it’s still a journey to heal from the psychological ones and her ability, or even desire, and to what extent she’s going to be a police officer or not. And she’s got Makayla. There’s a lot going on with her.”

Hank Voight and Hailey Upton’s murder will eventually be revealed

In the Chicago P.D. Season 9 premiere, Hailey Upton had difficulty coming to terms with her murdering Roy. At the end of season 8, she shot Roy and Voight did away with the body. But none of the others in the Intelligence Unit know what occurred, and they still believe Roy is on the run. Eventually, the other officers, as well as Kim Burgess, will find out Roy died. And this could deeply impact Burgess’s decision whether or not to return to the job.

“The guilt of it all and keeping it a secret from Burgess, keeping it a secret from Halstead, is a struggle and we see her kind of unravel throughout,” Upton actor Tracy Spiridakos told TV Insider. “We’re only on episode 5 so far, but from what I understand, we see that struggle continue for her for a while.”

The Chicago P.D. Season 9 air date is every Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST on NBC. We’ll certainly see what happens to Kim Burgess then.
