‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Is Back and The Search For Nick and Father Blackwood Commences — Part 3, Episode 1 Recap
Now is the time for reboots and revivals in Hollywood. Between entirely new concepts and cast reunions, some of your favorite shows from childhood are back for a new generation. And even though Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on a comic and the 1990s supernatural sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, this is not your regular reboots.
Now three parts in and on the second season, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina — or CAOS as it’s sometimes called — has Sabrina Spellman dealing with a lot. She committed herself as a full witch to the Dark Lord, only to find out that Satan is her father. Her mortal friends are there to help her, but things are just a little too dark for them sometimes. A few quests are going on right off the bat in this first episode, which throws fans straight into the fire. SPOILERS for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Episode 1 ahead.
Sabrina’s set on saving Nick from Hell and her father
Sabrina’s boyfriend Nicholas Scratch was last seen sacrificing himself to keep them all from Satan, aka Lucifer Morningstar. Going into Episode 1, Nick is a flesh-prison for the Dark Lord, and Sabrina cannot think of anything other than bringing him back.
This episode hones in on the trials and tribulations she has to go through to do so. This concept only takes her one episode to fulfill, but that doesn’t mean it was easy. Harvey, Roz, and Theo come along to the underworld and travel through various parts of Hell. They come across familiar faces and horrifying backdrops like a murderous Baxter High, but ultimately they make it to Lilith, who currently sits on the throne.
A significant flaw this quest brings out is Sabrina’s lack of caring for anything but her problems. She’s done this in the past; her savior complex takes over, and she fights for something that benefits her or will in the long run. She, of course, cares deeply for her friends and family, but she fights the hardest for her own-self interest.
Dante’s ‘Inferno’ is a nice touch to the story
High school movies and shows often study reading material that is a perfect allegory to whatever is going on. It’s often funny and way too obvious, but this show brings Dante’s Inferno in perfectly.
The real Ms. Wardwell is back and having Hell-driven nightmares, which brings her to use the material for the class. But in actuality, the Hell in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is divided up into nine layers, too. This is important moving forward, so keep that in mind. Caliban, Prince of Hell, is also introduced. He wants to claim the throne as well, which Sabrina is not going to allow without a fight.
Ambrose and Prudence are also on their own adventure. Prudence has a desire to kill her father, Faustus Blackwood, and Ambrose is helping. Their love story is becoming more prominent as they travel to New Orleans to find a foolproof way to track him down. On their journey, they meet Mambo Marie, a Haitian voodoo priestess, a vital character going forward.
Nick is in a hell within Hell and Sabrina has a lot on her plate
Even though the quest to bring Nick back to Greendale only takes one episode, the audience is shown the torment he’s facing in just that short time. Even though he’s mute and unexpressive on the outside, he’s battling the Dark Lord in his head. Satan wants to take control of his vessel, and they’re wrestling for it the entire time.
Nick doesn’t want Sabrina to agree to be Queen of Hell to save him, and he doesn’t want to be the reason Satan is let out of his body. But Sabrina isn’t about to let her beloved boyfriend go just yet.
Heading into Episode 2, Sabrina has Nick in the dungeons of the Academy of the Unseen Arts. She’s tried her best to bound him there, but will it hold? She has to figure out how the hell to get her father out of her boyfriend without letting him free. All while thinking about trying out for cheerleading. You know, just witchy things.
