Chris Evans Comments Calling ‘Lightyear’ Same-Sex Kiss Critics ‘Idiots’ Isn’t the First Time He’s Spoken His Mind
Chris Evans is no stranger to controversy. Whether comparing elected officials to toilets, speaking out about the Capitol riots, or accidentally sharing nudes to his dog-centric Instagram account, Evans is no stranger to speaking his mind and facing scrutiny for it. Evans’ comments calling some people idiots just ahead of Lightyear hitting theaters aren’t the first time he’s courted controversy with his words.
Chris Evans comments and calls critics of ‘Lightyear’ same-sex kiss ‘idiots’
Is there a same-sex kiss in Lightyear? Yes, but it’s been hard to keep track of the answer.
First, it was in the movie. Then, Disney and Pixar removed it. Now, it’s back, but the decision to reverse course again isn’t without controversy. Fourteen Asian and Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, banned the movie.
Evans didn’t hold back with his comments, calling those opposed to the kiss idiots and saying he would “pay them no mind” while embracing “growth that makes us human.” It’s no surprise ultimate nice guy Evans sticks up for LGBTQ causes — his brother, Scott, is gay.
Some might take issue with Evans courting controversy by speaking his mind, but chances are he doesn’t care. He’s voiced his opinion in the past with little regard to what others think.
Evans has strong opinions, and he’s never been afraid to voice them
Evans comments calling out anyone opposed to the same-sex kiss in Lightyear, and he’s been similarly outspoken in the past.
He let the world know he was not a fan of President Donald Trump. He frequently called out the former president on Twitter, and Evans called him a come-to-life toilet, as NME reported. Evans tweeted about the January 6 attack on the Capitol. He faced backlash from users who pointed out his face-to-face meetings with Ted Cruz and other lawmakers, as Indy100 (a site run by The Independent) reported.
The hashtag #chrisevansisoverparty trended on Twitter in 2020. Critics and fans both used the tag as they attempted to have their posts dominate the thread.
There was also the time Evans and Jeremy Renner made tasteless jokes while promoting a movie. Evans’ comments at that time were off the cuff, not thought out as a tweet might be, and he faced some pushback for what he said.
Evans speaks out and lets the fallout land however it may. His political beliefs might bother many fans, but it seems unlikely he’ll stop using social media to call out those in power (especially if he doesn’t like what he sees).
‘Lightyear’ producer says the kiss is not in the movie just for shock value
Evans’ comments and strong opinion about the Lightyear kiss are par for the course for the Captain America star. He’s always been outspoken about his beliefs. And the kiss is actually a key part of the story and character development.
Some people might be overlooking or misinformed that Lightyear’s same-sex kiss isn’t included just for pure shock value. Evans’ Buzz Lightyear has a complicated relationship with his father. The kiss helps illustrate Buzz’s lack of stability in his relationships (or lack of them in general).
Producer Galyn Susman told Reuters that the kiss and relationship between the two characters are integral to the story. It gives Buzz’s character something to reflect on.
“We have a relationship here which lasts an entire lifetime,” Susman said. “It’s loving, it’s supportive, and it shows Buzz exactly what he doesn’t have, and that’s the whole point. We should all be so lucky to have that kind of relationship in our life.”
