Chris Pine Stars in New Romantic Espionage Thriller ‘All the Old Knives’
The trailer for Prime Video’s upcoming spy thriller, All the Old Knives, promises an intriguing story of love and espionage. The movie stars Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton. Here’s more about the film’s story, cast, and release date.
‘All the Old Knives’ is based on a book
Prime Video’s All the Old Knives is an adaptation of Olen Steinhauer’s 2015 novel of the same name. Steinhauer, who’s known for works like The Tourist and An American Spy, also wrote the film’s screenplay.
All the Old Knives tells the story of Henry and Celia, two spies who meet for dinner to reminisce about their time together. But when they begin to discuss a failed mission that resulted in deadly airplane hijacking, tension and suspicion arise. And neither Henry nor Celia can trust the other will leave them alive.
“Two CIA agents and ex-lovers are brought back together years after a failed rescue attempt and forced to blur the lines between profession and passion in this deeply riveting tale of global espionage, moral dilemma, and deadly betrayal,” the official Prime Video synopsis teases.
Chris Pine plays former spy Henry Pelham in ‘All the Old Knives’
In All the Old Knives, Pine takes on the role of Henry Pelham, a C.I.A agent who’s sent to interview his ex-lover, but is still wallowing in the mistakes of their past. The actor is best known for portraying Captain Kirk in Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into the Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
Pine recently reprised his Wonder Woman (2017) role as Steve Trevor opposite Gal Gadot in the 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Along with All the Old Knives, he has three new movies on the way, including Tarik Saleh’s action film The Contractor; Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling starring Harry Styles; and the fantasy adventure, Dungeons and Dragons.

Thandiwe Newton stars opposite Pine as Celia, the former spy who Henry believes may have been the double agent who compromised their failed mission. The English actor has appeared in several popular projects over the years, including Mission Impossible 2, Crash, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and ER.
But her most popular role of recent years is playing the fierce humanoid robot Maeve in Westworld. For her performance in the HBO science fiction series, Newton won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2018.
All the Old Knives also features Laurence Fishburne, who’s known for blockbuster films like The Matrix and John Wick. Game of Thrones and The Crown star Jonathan Pryce also joins the cast.
What is the ‘All the Old Knives’ release date?
All the Old Knives is scheduled for an April 8, 2022 release. The movie will open in limited theaters, but will also get a simultaneous digital premiere. It will be available to stream on Prime Video on April 8 with no extra cost for Amazon Prime subscribers.
