Chris Rock made headlines at the 2022 Oscars

Of course, the world is still reeling from that infamous moment at the 2022 Oscars. Rock took the stage to present the award for Best Documentary Feature and cracked a few jokes. Following one aimed at Jada Pinkett Smith’s buzzed hairstyle, her husband Will Smith took the stage and slapped Rock across the face.

The Best Actor nominee then shouted expletives at Rock from his seat. And later, Smith returned to the stage in an impassioned speech when he won the Oscar, receiving a standing ovation as he grasped his award. Since then, everyone in Hollywood has weighed in on the incident’s implications and what consequences await.

The Will Smith slap could bode well for this movie

Finding a silver lining in such a dark, complicated affair as the 2022 Oscars slap is tricky. No matter where people stand on the incident, it’s messy and casts a pall over what should have been an evening devoted to the art of movies. But one positive to come from it is how it perhaps might open the doors to a greater discussion of the relationship between Black women and their hair. Ironically, Rock himself made a whole documentary about it.

The comedian stars in and produced the 2009 film Good Hair, which examines the distinctive cultural relationship between Black women and their hair. Many have criticized Rock’s insensitivity at the Oscars for targeting Pinkett Smith’s hair. In recent years, she has been open about her experiences with hair loss and alopecia. And Good Hair uncovers precisely why even a joke as seemingly banal as Rock’s G.I. Jane 2 remark could be so hurtful.

Is ‘Good Hair’ available to stream anywhere?

As the aftermath of the 2022 Oscars continues to unfold, fans might be curious to see Good Hair for themselves. Particularly for those outside of the Black community, the film could shed some light on the cultural role hairstyling plays. And for those who do want to watch Good Hair, there are thankfully plenty of options to watch it right now

According to JustWatch.com, the film is streaming in a variety of places. Peacock is the most notably place where fans can watch it. But Good Hair is also available to watch for free with ads on The Roku Channel, Vudu, Kanopy, Pluto TV, Plex, and IMDb TV. The critically acclaimed film remains the only documentary Rock has produced.
