When Christina Aguilera began to date her future husband, Jordan Bratman, she said she knew quickly that he was going to be an important person in her life. They fit well together and she felt safe with him. The couple married in 2005, and Aguilera admitted that she felt she got lucky with him. She said she would never date someone like herself.

Christina Aguilera said she wouldn’t want to date herself

When Aguilera met Bratman, she said she was in a particularly low place. She wasn’t seeking out a relationship, but she said she felt safe around Bratman.

“I was ready to give up on men,” she told Rolling Stone in 2006. “At that point I’d never had a positive male in my life, ever. I had a lot of walls up. But Jordan kept proving to me that he was there for me … At that point I’d just had it, in every sense of the word. I was going through a lot of personal stuff. Even my hair color going dark. I was in a dark place.”

She said she felt she was the biggest winner in the relationship. She wouldn’t date herself but felt Bratman was a very good partner.

“I wouldn’t date myself,” she said, adding, “[Jordan’s] got a supercomforting, supermellow warm sincerity about him. I’m so up and down emotionally sometimes, but he’s able to reach in there and pull me out.”

She got two tattoos dedicated to him

Aguilera was so sold on her relationship with Bratman that she got a tattoo for him shortly after they started dating. It read “i love j.b., always” in Spanish and Hebrew. She got another tattoo on her lower back when they married.

“This one I got right in the beginning of the Stripped tour, right in the beginning of Jordan and my relationship,” she said. “This one’s my wedding tattoo. In Hebrew it says, ‘I am my beloved, and my beloved is mine.’”

Christina Aguilera dated her current fiancé amid divorce proceedings with Jordan Bratman

Five years after their wedding, Aguilera and Bratman separated. Shortly after filing for divorce, Aguilera began dating Matthew Rutler, who worked as a production assistant on her film Burlesque. She said she wanted to take their relationship slowly because she had just gotten out of a marriage. Still, she fell for him quickly.

In 2014, Rutler proposed to Bratman. That same year, they welcomed a daughter. Ten years after the proposal, Rutler and Bratman still have not made it down the aisle. While they said they’ve discussed it, they don’t feel any particular rush to get married.
