‘Cobra Kai’ Creators’ Most Dangerous Experience Happened Off the Set
Cobra Kai devises epic peril for its cast and stunt teams. Not only are there fights, but jumping off buildings, obstacle courses and sometimes even vehicular stunts. Every stunt on Cobra Kai is safe, but creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg couldn’t say the same for the local Atlanta, Georgia environment.
Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg attended Cobra Kai: Live and Badass on May 4 to talk about the show. Showbiz Cheat Sheet was there to hear how they braved the elements in their rented house. Cobra Kai Season 5 premieres Sept. 9.
Luxury turned deadly in the ‘Cobra Kai’ house
Cobra Kai films in Atlanta, a popular hub of Hollywood production. The creators share a house together.
“This season, we were like you know what, let’s get a house with a pool,” Heald said. “It’s the dead of winter. Atlanta sounds very hot and it was like 15, 16 degrees and this pool was not big. It was bathtub size little thing but we had nothing to do because we went to work and we came home and this pool is just beckoning us. So we heated that thing and paid God knows what to heat this little bathtub and it was the only little solace we had of feeling like you know what? We went swimming today. We did something.”
2 ‘Cobra Kai’ creators got locked out in the cold
After a hard day of writing and/or shooting Cobra Kai, the guys deserved a break. Unfortunately, this break took a dangerous turn.
“One day Jon went into the house and accidentally locked Hayden and I outside in the pool,” Heald said. “I’m not kidding, it’s like 18 degrees and Hayden and I had no cell phones and no way of communicating with the outside world. We’re going to just freeze to death in this pool.”
They were also drinking Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka)’s beer of choice. That became their only survival tool.
“We were also drinking Coors Banquets,” Schlossberg said. “We just threw our Coors Banquets up at the window where Jon was.”
Oh, and by the way, they were skinny dipping.
“We had no towels,” Heald said. “All we literally had was an empty Coors Banquet.”
A close call
Fortunately, the empty cans got Hurwitz’s attention. Otherwise, there might not have been a Cobra Kai Season 5 and definitely wouldn’t have been a season 6.
“Jon did rescue us,” Heald said. “It was perilous for a moment. The show almost collapsed in on itself.”
Hurwitz explained how the accident occurred.
“In fairness, I did not lock you out,” Hurwitz said. “It locked itself. I was taking a nap. I went inside to take a nap and then I’m sleeping peacefully, I start hearing something at my window occasionally, like a little pebble being thrown.”
