Cole Sprouse and Kiernan Shipka to Star in New Movie Together
Whoever thought bringing Cole Sprouse and Kiernan Shipka together for a film thought right. Fans have been waiting for Riverdale and Sabrina the teenage witch to collide, and it’s happening in an unconventional way.
Although Archie won’t be showing up, these two actors are set to appear on the big screen together in an upcoming thriller.
Kiernan Shipka and Cole Sprouse to play a killer couple
Prepare to see Shipka and Sprouse in dark, new roles. Both actors have been cast alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Blood Ties, a film about a teen duo accused of murder.
According to Deadline, Mbatha-Raw plays the lead role as a detective investigating the deaths of Derek and Nancy Haysom, a Virginia couple believed to have been killed by their daughter and her boyfriend.
Shipka plays daughter Elizabeth “Lizzy” Haysom and Sprouse takes on Jens Soering, the boyfriend. Although both actors are part of the Archie Comics universe as stars on Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, this is the first time they’ll be sharing the screen.
‘Blood Ties’ is based on a true story
Per Deadline, the movie is based on a 2015 article written for the New Yorker by Nathan Heller. The case revolves around the 1985 double murder of the Haysoms, who were found slain in their home.
The Haysoms’ daughter Elizabeth was a college student studying at the University of Virginia. It was there she met Soering. Soering, the son of a German diplomat, started dating Haysom. When they weren’t together, they wrote letters to each other, and some of them contained fantasies about Haysom’s parents dying.
The two became suspects and were brought in for questioning, but when it was time for Soering to meet with detectives to provide fingerprints and other samples, he skipped out. In fact, they both left the country, a discovery made by Haysom’s older half brother.
Haysom and Soering traveled around the world for years, using different disguises and aliases until they were picked up for fraud in London. When Virginia detectives flew overseas to question them, Soering confessed but later recanted. Both were sentenced to prison, and in the years that followed, both Soering and Haysom’s stories changed.
Toward the end of 2019, both were paroled after serving more than 30 years in prison. Soering was 18 at the time of the murders.
The projects brings Shipka and her idol together
While it’s true that fans have been holding out for that Greendale-Riverdale crossover that will never happen, some may remember what Shipka said about Sprouse last year.
During her appearance at the 2019 Kids’ Choice Awards, Entertainment Tonight asked Shipka who her celebrity idol was when she was a kid. She named the Sprouses.
“I mean, I was a pretty big [Suite Life of] Zack and Cody fan,” Shipka admitted. “I know Dylan and Cole now, so I’m making my 7-year-old self really proud.”
Blood Ties is heading to market at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sprouse can currently be seen in Riverdale while Shipka just wrapped up the final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
