Since last playing in the NFL in the 2016 season, Colin Kaepernick remains on the outside looking into the league. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback has mostly gone without much consideration for a possible roster spot. Through that time, Kaepernick‘s message has garnered much support and understanding from the sports world. That has taken a significant step forward over the last several weeks, with many of his colleagues voicing their support. He can now add the backing from a legendary rap artist to the list.

Colin Kaepernick sticking firm with his stance

Through nearly the last three years, Colin Kaepernick has yet to sniff an NFL roster as he remains on the open market.

There has been much criticism tossed Kaepernick’s way that has centered on his stance toward kneeling during the national anthem. His views on social issues have been seen as a distraction that pushed teams to bypass bringing him in for a workout. There have been many scenarios where he could have received a tryout, but another quarterback with lesser accomplishments and ability was given the opportunity.

Despite that, Kaepernick stays firm with his stance and beliefs to bring more focus toward the ongoing social injustices that the black community faces. The recent uptick with the protests after the tragic passings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery led to more support for the 32-year-old’s efforts.

That has seen many several NFL star players such as Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Michael Thomas, DeAndre Hopkins, Odell Beckham Jr., Ezekiel Elliott, and Tyrann Mathieu voiced their concerns. The NFL also committed $250 million over the next 10 years to help end systemic racism. Beyond that, Kaepernick just received support from another significant public figure.

Dr. Dre shows support for Colin Kaepernick

The recent weeks have seen a more significant push of public support for Colin Kaepernick’s continued efforts for social change.

Beyond seeing many of his colleagues, both past and present players, show support, it has gone outside that. Legendary rapper and producer Dr. Dre took to Instagram to post a photo of himself kneeling next to Kaepernick with the caption “Defiant.”

There isn’t much to the post, but it sends a powerful message that Dr. Dre has his full support behind the former NFL quarterback. It shows that Kaepernick’s stance has earned recognition well outside the realm of sports with many in the music industry, showing their backing.

Dre has a long connection with the 32-year-old that dates back to 2013 when he signed a deal with Beats by Dre. It adds another big-name public figure to the list of those applauding Kaepernick’s endeavors in social justice.

The more prominent focus remains on the push for social change, but the question stays with whether Colin Kaepernick will receive another shot to continue his NFL career.

Kaepernick hasn’t wavered in his desire to play in the league, but it has seen a lack of opportunities presented to him. During his workout late last year, he made that notion quite clear that his passion is still the same, and that was reaffirmed earlier this offseason. The recent push to see him get another chance to get back into the NFL saw several NFL coaches such as Doug Pederson and Anthony Lynn voicing that Kaepernick deserves a workout.

Roger Goodell also aired that sentiment by publicly encouraging teams to bring him in to compete for a roster spot. However, it comes down to the actions speaking louder than the words as Kaepernick continues to wait for a chance to prove he still belongs in the NFL.
