Three years after walking away from Counting On, former stars Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard are speaking out about their life post-reality TV. Since their exit, Jill and Derick have distanced themselves from her parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. Jill’s been busy raising her two children as a stay-at-home mom. Meanwhile, Derick is a full-time student at the University of Arkansas School of Law. One of the biggest questions fans have had since Jill and Derick left Counting On is – how do they make money? In a new YouTube video, the couple finally gave fans an answer.

Jim Bob Duggar didn’t pay Jill and Derick for appearing in ‘Counting On’

Jill and Derick left her family’s TLC reality series in late 2017. Since then, he has claimed on social media that Jim Bob keeps all of the family’s Counting On money. The Duggar family has been the stars of their own reality TV show since 2008.

Cheat Sheet has previously reported that the family earns between $25,000 and $40,000 per episode. However, Jim Bob considers the show to be part of the family’s ministry. Therefore, all of the proceeds go to him, and his children are considered volunteers.

When TLC canceled 19 Kids & Counting due to Josh Duggar’s scandals, Jill and her sister Jessa returned a few months later in Jill & Jessa: Counting On. The idea was the spinoff would focus only on Jill and Jessa and their growing families.

Eventually, TLC dropped Jill and Jessa’s name from the title and went back to focusing on the entire Duggar family. Throughout all of this, Jill never received a dime. She and Derick revealed on their YouTube video “Q&A: Birth Control, Budget, LGBTQ+ More!” that they had to get a lawyer involved to get paid.

Jill and Derick had to hire a lawyer to get the money Jim Bob owed

In the video, Jill finally spoke up about her husband’s social media claims that her dad doesn’t pay his children. She made it clear that her husband was telling the truth.

“Up until the time we left the show, we hadn’t been paid for anything,” Jill revealed. “Of course there were perks that came along with filming. If you were traveling or whatever they might cover those expenses.”

After getting the lawyer involved, Derick says they were able to recover a portion of what Jill should have been paid. Because they both went into their marriage debt-free, the couple says that they’ve been able to live off of their savings since leaving Counting On.

However, the couple is still hustling. Derick is paying his way through law school with scholarships and odd jobs. Jill is earning money through blog posts and social media sponsorships. The couple also made it clear that they have monetized their YouTube channel. This means they are earning money from their revealing videos.

The former ‘Counting On’ stars are extremely frugal

Both Jill and Derick come from extremely frugal families. As Counting On fans know, Jill’s large family often relied on thrift shops and donations before they were on reality TV. Derick told fans in the YouTube video that he was able to get his undergraduate degree at Oklahoma State University without student loans. As a former school counselor, Derick’s mom helped him find scholarships.

Jill and Derick explained that they communicate often about money, and they have regular “budget meetings.” They promoted Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and his Every Dollar Budget App as their favorite financial tools. Jill identified herself as the spender in the relationship, while Derick is the saver.
