Former Counting On stars Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have changed quite a bit since leaving the TLC show back in 2017. Ever since their departure, there has been noticeable tension between the Dillards and the Duggar parents, Jim Bob and Michelle.

Critics of the show have grown to respect Dillard over the last few years — but they’ve made it clear they don’t love him.

Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard stepped away from ‘Counting On’ in 2017

Back in 2014, fans watched Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard tie the knot on the Duggar family’s popular reality show, 19 Kids and Counting. In 2015, the show rebranded to Counting On after Josh Duggar’s sexual abuse allegations, and Jill Duggar and her husband became stars of the show. For the next two years, cameras followed Duggar and Dillard while they moved to South America, welcomed two kids, and began their lives as a family of four.

In 2017, though, the couple unexpectedly quit the show, leading some to believe they were fired over Dillard’s controversial comments about other TLC stars. But since then, it’s been learned that Duggar and Dillard wanted out of their family’s constricting grasp.

Duggar family critics still don’t love Derick Dillard — and aren’t sure they ever will

Over the last few years, Duggar has been coming into her own. She pierced her ears, began drinking alcohol, and started wearing jeans and shorts. Fans loved the new Duggar, and even critics gave Dillard credit for allowing his wife to explore her own interests. Now, Dillard has just graduated law school, but despite his progress, critics have mixed feelings about him as a person.

“I like how messy he is and how he seems to really care for Jill and his sons. Not a big fan of him as a person, but I can acknowledge that he has accomplished something really impressive,” one user wrote of Dillard’s law school graduation on Reddit. However, others weren’t so kind.

“I wouldn’t say he’s a fan favorite by any means … I’d say here that he is viewed as the best of the worst, with emphasis still on worse,” another user wrote.

“I still do not agree with him on many issues though I respect him for the way he treats Jill and their children. She seems truly happy not faking it like the others,” another person commented.

Will Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard ever clear up the drama with Duggar’s family?

Critics seem to agree that Dillard not controlling his wife certainly earns him some points. And he appears to be letting Duggar make her own decisions in terms of her relationship with her family. The question remains: Will Duggar and Dillard ever repair their relationship with Michelle and Jim Bob?

Duggar has begun doing YouTube interviews where she often discusses the tension between her and her family. Though she remains hopeful that things will clear up, she hasn’t showed many signs of progress with her parents. Still, Duggar appears to have a strong relationship with her siblings, which might be all she needs.
