1 of Lana Del Rey’s famous songs originally sounded different

Del Rey and Love have a history together. According to a 2017 Dazed article, they toured together once. Del Rey said this was a fantastic experience for her. She compared it to owning one of Elizabeth Taylor‘s diamonds. While discussing each other’s work, Love named her favorite song by Del Rey.

“I think my very, very favorite song of yours — you’re not gonna like this because it’s early — is ‘Blue Jeans,'” Love said. “I mean, ‘You’re so fresh to death and sick as ca-cancer’? Who does that?”

Del Rey said the original version of “Blue Jeans” was considerably different. “I have to say, that track has this guy Emile Haynie all over it,” she recalled. “I remember ‘Blue Jeans’ was more of a Chris Isaak ballad and then I went in with him and it came out sounding the way it does now. I was like, ‘That’s the power of additional production.'”

Courtney Love asked Lana Del Rey if a lyric from ‘Blue Jeans’ reflected her life

Del Rey gave fans more details on the creation of “Blue Jeans.” “The song was on the radio in the U.K., on Radio 1, and I remember thinking, ‘F***, that started off as a classical composition riff that I got from my composer friend, Dan Heath,'” she remembered. “It was, like, six chords that I started singing on.”

Love asked Del Rey if one line of the song reflected her life. “You have that lyric (on the song), ‘You were sorta punk rock, I grew up on hip-hop,'” she said. “Did you really grow up on hip-hop?” Del Rey responded by saying she wasn’t exposed to good music until she was in high school. She didn’t directly answer Love’s question.

The way audiences in the United States and the United Kingdom reacted to ‘Blue Jeans’

“Blue Jeans” wasn’t much of a hit in the United States. The song did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. On the other hand, its parent album, Born to Die, became a chart juggernaut. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for a whopping 419 weeks.

“Blue Jeans” was considerably more popular in the United Kingdom. The Official Charts Company reports the song peaked at No. 32 and remained on the chart for seven weeks. Meanwhile, Born to Die reached No. 1 in the U.K. for two of its 150 weeks on the chart. “Blue Jeans” was a hit — and it clearly impressed Love.
