Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) have worked together since the very beginning of the hit series Criminal Minds. In season 11, Morgan leaves the Behavioral Analysis Unit. But there are numerous seasons of these two friends and co-workers interacting together, and they poke fun at each other at times, including a prank war for the ages. Reid also once scared Morgan while wearing a mask, and it’s a lighthearted moment the two share.

Reid and Morgan are both original members of the team in Criminal Minds, and they became close over the years while working in such close proximity. They both use their skills to lend information and catch countless unsubs as integral and important members of the BAU. But they are also good friends, and it makes the work all that more enjoyable.

Reid is extremely smart, and he graduated from high school before most kids his age were even finished with middle school. He has not one, but three PhDs in Engineering, Mathematics, and Chemistry according to his Fandom page. Although he might not always know how to read the room, he’s extremely capable when it comes to catching unsubs and he seems to be one step ahead most of the time.

Morgan went to school for Law, and he used to be a cop in Chicago, according to his Fandom page. He has a tough exterior, but he genuinely cares about the members of the team. His close friendship with Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) is on full display over the years, and they work well together. However, their friendship stayed just that: a friendship, despite their flirtations.

But it’s not all seriousness all the time. In season 3, episode 6 called “About Face,” Reid once scared Morgan while wearing a Halloween mask. The moment is arguably one of the funniest between them. Reid walks into the office wearing a Frankenstein mask as he hands out candy to someone walking by while grunting along the way.

Morgan is leaning back in his chair looking at papers when Reid creeps up from behind him and says, “I’m going to get you” in his ear. Morgan immediately reacts, moving upward in his chair from the scare he wasn’t expecting. He’s clearly taken off guard in the moment to see a masked man right in his face.

“Reid,” Morgan says.

“Happy All Hallows’ Eve folks,” Reid says while still wearing the mask with a fake noose tied around his neck along with a plastic pumpkin on his arm. He even has a plastic head with hair that he throws at Agent Emily Prentiss’ (Paget Brewster).

“See that right there is why Halloween creeps me out,” Morgan says.

“You’re scared of Halloween?” Reid asks him.

“I didn’t say I was scared, I said I was creeped out,” Morgan clarifies. “There’s a difference there, youngster you should look it up.”

Prentiss asks him what “creeps him out about it,” and Morgan replies, “I don’t know, people wearing masks. I don’t like folks in disguises.”

But Reid has a different outlook on it. “That’s the best thing about Halloween,” Reid explains. “You can be anyone you want to be.”

“No, I’m pretty good just being me,” Morgan fills him in.

It might just be a fleeting moment in Criminal Minds, but it’s a fun reminder of the witty banter the team shares together, especially Reid and Morgan.
