‘Criminal Minds’: Fans Discuss Garcia and Morgan ‘Dating’: ‘They Are Way Too Different to Date’
In the history of the hit series Criminal Minds, there is one friendship that stands out from all the rest, and that of course means we’re talking about Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangness) and SSA Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore). They have a rather unique friendship all their own, and it’s prompted some fans to discuss their thoughts on the two of them “dating.”

Garcia and Morgan worked together as integral members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit catching the unsubs for many years. They are good friends who happen to work together as well. But their friendship is an unusual one between co-workers. They call each other cute pet names, such as Morgan calling Garcia “baby girl” on many occasions. They make jokes and comments that could be considered inappropriate to some, but it’s part of their close-knit friendship. They have loads of chemistry together, and they’ve remained friends despite any comments that make viewers think it could be something more. They care about each other lot, but it never was taken to the next level, and the two never actually dated. They just stayed super close friends that seemed to constantly flirt with one another.
Of course, the closeness of Garcia and Morgan and their unconventional friendship has prompted fans over the years to think the two could have something more, and some even hoped they’d get together eventually. But it never happened.
‘Criminal Minds’ fans discuss Garcia and Morgan ‘dating’
On September 12, 2021, a fan on Reddit made a post titled, “Penelope and Derek actually dating.” They continue, “What do y’all think of the two of them actually dating? I know interteam dating was never explored (thank goodness), but how do y’all think they would have worked as an actual couple?”
According to the comments, fans don’t seem to think the two would have worked in a dating relationship, and many prefer them as friends. They have a unique and loving relationship as friends, so why ruin it? Also, it runs the risk of them breaking up, and things would change dramatically.
One fan likes them as friends and doesn’t think the two would have “much chemistry” more than what they already have. But they wouldn’t mind had they taken things there.
“Personally, I prefer them being friends,” a fan weighed in. “They had a great platonic relationship and were always there for each other, but I didn’t really feel like there would be much chemistry past that. But on the other hand, they’re so sweet with each other and have a great relationship that I wouldn’t be mad if they did get together.”
Another fan actually prefers them as strictly just friends. “I definitely prefer friends,” they said. “If they had a relationship the whole team dynamic would change and we wouldn’t get the humor with Penelope and her coworkers.”
A fan thinks the two are “compatible,” but they don’t think it would have been a good idea for them to date. Plus, it would have been against rules of course as they work so closely together.
“Compatible as I think they would’ve been – there was genuine respect and, yes, love between them – they’re teammates, so a romantic relationship would’ve been a lousy idea and probably a breach of a few dozen rules and regulations,” they said.
While another fan thinks Garcia and Morgan are just “way too different.” Although they do have differences, they bring out the best in each other and play off each other well as friends.
“Nope. They are way too different to date,” a fan said. “Much prefer Penelope with Kevin.”
However, some fans are about Garcia and Morgan dating. “I would personally have loved it, mainly because I relate to Garcia and have the hots for Morgan, but I think they would have been cute,” they said.
Fans have opinions when it comes to Garcia and Morgan’s relationship and if they were to date. Fans of Criminal Minds seem to prefer the two as friends though.
