Critic Compares Meghan Markle to This ‘Irrelevant Movie Star’ Amid Ongoing Tabloid Lawsuit
Before marrying into the royal family, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was an actress. She has appeared in several movies and acted in numerous shows.
Meghan is now involved in a highly-publicized lawsuit against a few British newspapers, which has led one critic to draw comparisons between her and another actor, whom is deemed an “irrelevant movie star.” Read on below to find out why the comparisons were drawn and what Meghan can perhaps learn from the actor.
Meghan Markle has been suing the British media for invading her privacy
In the fall of 2019, Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, announced they would be filing a lawsuit against a few tabloid outlets.
A big part of the lawsuit is the couple’s claim that these newspapers invaded their privacy. For instance, The Mail On Sunday was accused of publishing a private letter Meghan wrote to her father and editing said letter to paint Meghan in a negative light.
Additionally, The Mail On Sunday also tried to uncover the identity of five friends who spoke to People about Meghan. As a result, Meghan has also been trying to protect her friends. She said in a witness statement, according to The Telegraph, “[The women] made a choice on their own to speak anonymously with a U.S. media outlet more than a year ago, to defend me from the bullying behavior of Britain’s tabloid media. These five women are not on trial, and nor am I.”
Critic compares Meghan Markle’s lawsuit to Johnny Depp’s
One writer, Maureen Callahan, compares Meghan’s lawsuit to Johnny Depp’s recent libel trial. Both Meghan and Depp are American celebrities who decided to take legal actions against British news outlets.
However, Callahan points out that Depp’s lawsuit did not end too well for him, which is why Callahan urges Meghan to “drop her libel lawsuit immediately.” As Callahan notes, Depp’s trial was initially a battle over the use of a phrase in the media, but it ended up revealing a lot of unsavory information about his marriage to Amber Heard.
“Libel lawsuits in the UK, as Depp is learning, are far more brutal than those in the US,” Callahan writes in the New York Post. “Depp filed suit over just one adjective, ‘wife-beater.’ But instead of a trial narrowly focused on that word, the world has been made privy to the most grisly, humiliating details of his ill-fated marriage to ex-wife Amber Heard — evidence submitted in everything from Depp’s drug binges at breakfast to Heard, or one of her friends, pooping in the marital bed.”
Callahan adds, “And just like that, the Coolest Guy in the World has become, perhaps irrevocably, a sad caricature of an aged-out, irrelevant movie star.”
Regardless of what the verdict is in Depp’s case, Callahan’s point is that his reputation has suffered severe damage.
Will Meghan Markle’s reputation go down the same drain?
Of course, it is unclear what will happen to Meghan during the course of her lawsuit and after it concludes. For now, she and Harry seem concerned that the British media has not been too kind to them, and it looks like the lawsuit is their way of forcing the media to treat them fairly.
Meghan has also been subjected to a lot of negative rumors about her character, but as seen in Depp’s trial, there is a chance her reputation could get damaged even more, especially if her trial ends up revealing personal information about her family life. On the other hand, Meghan could also come out unscathed and be victorious.
