Rapper DaBaby is one of the biggest hip-hop stars of 2019 and is experiencing a record surge in popularity. He has collaborated with some of music’s most influential stars and is showing every sign of continuing his hot streak into 2020.

Still, DaBaby’s career has been full of controversy, even in the short time that he has been on the scene. From arrests to drug controversies and even wild spending sprees, DaBaby is definitely one star who always keeps things interesting.

DaBaby was born Jonathan Lyndale Kirk in Cleveland, Ohio in 1991. When he was a young child, DaBaby moved to North Carolina where he spent the majority of his young adult life. He was raised in a military family, with his father in the Army and his mother a finance worker. DaBaby felt drawn to music at a young age and decided to explore rapping.

Initially, DaBaby started rapping under the stage name Baby Jesus. His onstage shtick involved a lot of over-the-top antics, including wearing a diaper during some performances. In 2019, DaBaby rebranded, taking his current stage name and developing his persona even more.

His debut studio album, Baby on Baby, was released in March 2019 and it included quite popular singles like “Suge,” which has been one of his most popular tracks. During this time, the young artist studied his craft intensely, working with fellow performers such as Offset, Megan Thee Stallion, Rich the Kid, and Rich Homie Quan.

What controversies has DaBaby been involved in?

DaBaby is undoubtedly talented, but on occasion, his skills have been overshadowed by some pretty serious controversies. In late 2018, DaBaby was involved in a deadly shooting at a Walmart in North Carolina. The rapper confirmed later that he was an active participant in the shooting but was insistent that he acted in self-defense.

In early January 2020, DaBaby was arrested on a battery charge in connection with a robbery investigation. The latest arrest comes on the heels of an investigation into the rapper’s possible marijuana possession. Still, it seems as though the artist is currently free and clear – reports claim that he was recently cleared of all wrongdoing and is back to working on his music full-time. Hopefully, DaBaby will be able to stay focused on his music and career and not wind up in any more troubling situations over the next year.

DaBaby has spent outrageous amounts on his music videos

What sets DaBaby apart from many other artists is the fact that he is truly committed to his music. He has proven that he is willing to do whatever it takes in order to take his music to the next level. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, DaBaby admitted that he has spent copious amounts of his own money to make his music videos. “I paid for every video I ever shot,” he said, “$100,000 budget, $70,000, $60,000, I’ve probably spent like half a million dollars on videos this year, by myself, just me. I ain’t willing to settle for less.” He went on to say that it’s not possible to “cheat the grind” and that artists will get out of their art what they put into it.

With talent, determination, and charisma, DaBaby will undoubtedly continue to make waves over the next several years. In the space of just a few years, he has already shown that he has what it takes to succeed despite occasional rough patches with the law.
