‘Dancing with the Stars’ Fans Can’t Get Over Derek Hough’s Surprise ‘Tango of the Dead’ Performance
Derek Hough is usually behind the judges’ panel on Dancing with the Stars. But during the season 30 Horror Night, Hough briefly stepped away from Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli to perform live in the ballroom with his girlfriend, Hayley Erbert. Derek Hough surprises ‘Dancing with the Stars’ fans with Horror Night performance
In, 2016 Hough announced his exit from Dancing with the Stars. At the time, Hough left to appear as a judge on NBC’s World of Dance. But in 2020, the ballroom dance expert made his return to the ABC competition series. In seasons 29 and 30, Hough has served as a fourth judge.
Leading up to the Horror Night performances in season 30, Hough teased fans about returning to the dance floor. “I’ve really enjoyed being a judge on DWTS, but this Monday, I get from behind the desk and hit the dance floor,” Hough said on Instagram on Oct. 23, two days before the show.
During the Halloween-themed episode of Dancing with the Stars, Hough, Erbert, and several dancers from the cast of his Las Vegas residency No Limit at The Venitian Resort joined him in the ballroom. Together, they performed the “Tango of the Dead,” wherein Erbert’s role summons her love back from the grave. Hough’s choreography was set to “Deadwood/New Blood” by Really Slow Motion/Zayde Wølf.

Fans couldn’t contain themselves on Twitter and Instagram after seeing Hough’s performance. “By far THE.BEST.DANCER.EVER” one fan commented on Hough’s Instagram post of his ghoulishly tattooed look for the evening.
“Just watched you dance and your [talent] is incomparable!!” a fan replied to Hough’s tweet regarding the performance. “The emotion you brought when you danced was intense and I loved every minute of it!! Thank you Derek. Such a treat to see you dance, no matter where, no matter when!!”
“Derek, you and Hailey always seem to top yourself!” says another fan. “Absolutely loved it!!”
“I wish so much that I could see you live,” another fan replied to a tweet from the Dancing with the Stars Twitter account. “I could not move from the chair — so AMAZING!!!!” Another fan called Hough’s performance “exquisite” and “full of grace, elegance, and power.”
The band Really Slow Motion also enjoyed Hough’s performance. “Great moves!!” they commented on DWTS’ upload to YouTube. “Thanks for using our music.”
Will Derek Hough win another Emmy for his’ Dancing with the Stars’ Horror Night performance?
Hough was recognized at the 73rd Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography For Variety Or Reality Programming. He was recognized for his paso doble with Erbert in season 29.
After his performance during season 30’s Horror Night, Hough is likely to be nominated for another Emmy in the same category at the 74th Emmy Awards. But only time will tell!
