Sean Diddy Combs was known to lash out at his aspiring artists on the reality series Making the Band. But Danity Kane member Dawn Richard once recalled a time when Diddy went too far with the group. It was the first time a livid Richard was ready to get physical with the producer.

Danity Kane formed through Diddy’s Making the Band reality series. Diddy’s first attempt to find a superstar group, Making the Band 2, followed the rise and fall of Diddy’s rap and R&B team, Da Band.

His follow-up, Making the Band 3, saw him focus on recruiting the next big female pop star group. The group would consist of singers Aubrey O’Day, Dawn Richard, Shannon Bex, Wanita Woodgett, and Aundrea Fimbres. But Woodgett and Fimbres would be the first two to leave the group.

Viewers often saw Diddy lose his temper when dealing with his music proteges. His outbursts were a frequent theme on both Making the Band 2 and 3. So, it might not come as a surprise that the controversial mogul would yell and swear at Danity Kane whenever he felt they were slacking.

Danity Kane, like many artists, became used to these reactions. But Richard once reflected on a time when Diddy might’ve gone too far. The incident came when Danity Kane didn’t know they had to rehearse on a particular day. According to Richard, Diddy immediately chastised the girls for the mistake.

“He makes you believe that you suck all to hell, and you’ve been working all hours of the night,” Richard once told Sway’s Universe. “Me and him got in a huge [argument].”

Richard didn’t want to provide too many specifics about what Diddy said to her and her bandmates, but there were enough details to provide more context to their fight.

“He was like, ‘Y’all b****** don’t want it. Y’all don’t want it.’ And I was like, ‘Puff, why are you talking so loud?’ I never raised [my voice]. I kind of always been respectful, I never really went too out of line with Puff. I threw my purse down and was like, ‘Well, you want to go? We can go.’ There was this chest battle that happened between him and me.”

The confrontation surprised everyone there, as they didn’t believe Richard had that side to her. After their argument, though, Diddy seemed to calm down. According to Richard, the incident convinced Diddy to reevaluate how he treated the group.

There were certain moments between Diddy and the group that Richard felt wouldn’t be looked at too fondly in current times. Richard once reflected on another incident where Diddy would berate the group harshly, belittling their looks. But this was all done to prepare them for being in the spotlight.

“He would bring us in the room and say, ‘You’re ugly. You gotta fix your face.’ Wild stuff. But he was preparing us for what the industry would be,” Richard once said on the Wild Wayne Unchained podcast. “But if we would have done what we did in this time, Puff would have been crucified. Because you can’t talk to women now — what he was saying, it was aggressive. It was really aggressive. It was crazy.”

Despite Diddy’s methods, Richard said that she valued the mogul’s lessons at the time. If only because the record producer helped launch her career.

“Puff, it was not all great, but man, did he teach me to have the tools to be ready; lessons, bread crumbs that I will take,” she said. ” If I’m going to take the risk, I’m OK with whatever the outcome because I can create it. It doesn’t matter where it falls; it can be done. And if I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it at the best of my ability so that no matter if no one loves it, they can’t say it wasn’t of quality.”
