Darren Mann will star opposite Morgan Freeman in the upcoming movie, The Minute You Wake Up Dead. Here’s a breakdown of the actor’s dynamic career, and what his exciting new film is about.
Darren Mann is a Canadian actor and hockey player
Mann is a Canadian actor who was born in Vancouver. He played hockey in the All American Hockey League for the Chi-Town Shooters from 2010 to 2011.
After sustaining injuries on the ice, Mann started his professional acting career in 2012. Early on, he appeared on episodes of several popular CW shows, including The Tomorrow People, The 100, iZombie, Supernatural. In 2017, he took on the recurring role of warlock Luke Chalfant in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Mann appeared in his first major movie, Hello Destroyer, in 2016. The Indie project, which tells the story of a young hockey player, debuted at the Toronto Film Festival. The 32-year-old was also featured in films like House of the Witch, Giant Little Ones, and Twisted Blues.
The Canadian actor was most recently seen in IFC’s Embattled, in which he plays an MMA fighter opposite Stephen Dorff. Currently, Mann stars in the TNT drama, Animal Kingdom.
Darren Mann joins ‘The Minute You Wake Up Dead’ cast opposite Morgan Freeman
Mann’s next venture is the upcoming feature film, The Minute You Wake Up Dead. As reported by Variety, the movie is a neo-noir thriller that tells the story of a stockbroker from a small town in the South who gets caught up in a string of murders after running an insurance scam with his neighbor.
The movie was written by Timothy Holland and is being directed by Michael Mailer. Freeman is reportedly portraying the town’s sheriff, Thurmond Fowler. The cast also includes Blindspot and Loki actor Jamie Alexander and Yellowstone star Cole Hauser.
In an Instagram post, Mann revealed he plays a character named Lucius. And he shared how much fun he’s having filming the project.
“Having an absolute blast filming this one in Mississippi!” Mann wrote. “Can’t wait for you all to meet Lucius.”
Darren Mann uses his hockey experiences to inform his craft
In a 2020 interview with 1883 Magazine, Mann talked about his passion for both hockey and acting. And he revealed that he calls the lessons he learned as an athlete to inform his acting work.
“In interviews I find I circle back to hockey in some way because, without those years in the sports world, I don’t think I’d be where I’m at today,” Mann said. “There are so many valuable lessons I learned from all of the great coaches I’ve had that instilled a work ethic and built character and integrity in me that’s difficult to achieve.”
“Those are life lessons that you take when you’re young and you obtain an open mindset,” he added. “At that point, you’re still learning and becoming your own man and that was always really impactful to me.”
The Minute You Wake Up Dead is currently in production. No official release date has been announced.
