Dave Grohl Once Said He Was ‘Officially Obsessed’ With Taylor Swift
During a concert in London on Saturday, June 22, Dave Grohl appeared to take a swipe at Taylor Swift. Both artists were performing in the city that weekend, with the Foo Fighters on their Everything or Nothing at All Tour and Swift on her Eras Tour. Grohl seemed to insinuate that Swift does not perform live. Her fans found this surprising, as Grohl previously said he was obsessed with Swift’s music.
Dave Grohl said he was a big fan of Taylor Swift in 2015
While performing at Earlham Park in Norwich in 2015, Grohl spoke to the crowd about his admiration for Swift. That day, Swift performed at Radio 1’s Big Weekend on the main stage shortly before The Foo Fighters. When the rock band took the stage, Grohl dedicated the song “Congregation” to Swift.
“I’m officially obsessed, she might want to get a restraining order,” he said, per BBC. “To my opening band, Taylor Swift. Taylor and the Swifts.”
Before closing out the performance with “Best of You,” Grohl referenced Swift once more.
“My kids will kill me for saying this, but this one is dedicated to Taylor Swift,” he said.
Dave Grohl seemingly insinuated Taylor Swift didn’t perform live
Nearly 10 years later, Swift and Grohl were both performing in London. While addressing the crowd, Grohl mentioned that the Eras Tour was currently taking place in the city.
“I tell you, man, you don’t want to suffer the wrath of Taylor Swift,” he said, per Variety, adding, “So we like to call our tour the ‘Errors Tour.’ We’ve had more than a few eras, and more than a few f***ing errors as well. Just a couple.”
He then said that their “errors” were a natural consequence of performing live. Fans of Swift took this to mean he was insinuating Swift did not perform live.
“That’s because we actually play live. What? Just saying,” he said. “You guys like raw, live rock ‘n’ roll music, right? You came to the right f***ing place.”
She appeared to respond at a concert the following day
While Swift has yet to directly respond to Grohl’s remarks, she appeared to reference them at a concert the following day.
“Every one of my band members, every single one of our crew, my band — who’s gonna be playing live for you for three and a half hours tonight — they deserve this so much,” Swift said, per Forbes. “And so does every one of my fellow performers. And you just gave that to us so generously. We will never forget it.”
Swift pointed to her live band, but many social media users pointed out the fact that Grohl was likely referencing the fact that she uses backing tracks. Swift sings over a track of her own background vocals that she has recorded and layered in the studio. The Foo Fighters perform without the use of backing tracks.
