Davy Jones’s unexpected death on Feb. 29, 2012, at the age of 66, shocked fans of The Monkees. Since that day ten years ago, two other members of the foursome have also died, including Peter Tork (2019) and Mike Nesmith (2021). However, fans remembered the joy Jones brought to their lives instead of focusing on his death and recognized the entertainer on Twitter, calling him “everybody’s heartthrob.”

Mike Nesmith once said The Monkees were Davy Jones

“For me, David was The Monkees,” Mike Nesmith once said in an interview with Rolling Stone shortly after Jones died.

“They were his band. We were his sidemen. He was the focal point of the romance, the lovely boy, innocent and approachable.”

Nesmith also alluded to the fact that Jones was the group’s focal point for a multitude of reasons.

“I think David was the first one selected, and they built the show around him. English (all the rage), attractive, and a very accomplished singer and dancer, right off the Broadway stage from a hit musical. None of the other three of us had any of those chops.”

In a tweet dated Feb. 28, Jones was honored the day before his passing.

The entertainer died on a leap year. His date of death was Feb. 29. Therefore, his death anniversary has only formally occurred in 2016 and 2020. The next leap year will be 2024.

Alongside a photo of Jones dressed in the apparel, he wore as part of The Monkees television series, the band’s official site tweeted their memory of the performer.

“Remembering the tambourine-bangin’ sweetheart Davy Jones today. He was America’s heartthrob, even if he was from across the pond. While Davy died a leap year, you can feel the impact his life and music continue to have on the world,” the caption stated.

Fans shared their thoughts regarding the beloved television personality and entertainer.

“Everybody’s heartthrob! Rest in Peace, Davy Jones. You’re gone but not forgotten,” wrote one follower.

“RIP Davy. We all still love you and love to hear you sing your songs. Thanks, Micky, for remembering. Davy hope you are well. Love you too,” penned a second Twitter user.

“I remember hearing about this and how devastated I was. We miss you, Davy,” tweeted a third fan.

The series was conceived by Screen Gems executives Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson and inspired by misadventures seen in The Beatles’ 1964 film A Hard Day’s Night.

The two execs formed Raybert Productions in 1965. They cast the four leads after an open call one year later, and The Monkees exploded onto the small-screen. The show eventually became a big hit for NBC.

The series detailed the misadventures of a struggling band with a mix of pop music and psychedelia.

The Monkees lasted two seasons and 58 episodes before the series came to a close.
