‘Dawson’s Creek’: Are Jack and Andie Twins? And Who’s Older, Kerr Smith or Meredith Monroe?
The hit series Dawson’s Creek introduced a pair of siblings, Jack (Kerr Smith) and Andie (Meredith Monroe) McPhee, in season 2. The beloved characters attend Capeside High together. However, it wasn’t always clear whether they were twins or not. Discover what the writers intended — and how old Smith and Monroe were while playing them.
Kerr Smith and Meredith Monroe joined ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Season 2
The first season of Dawson’s Creek focused on the original four teenagers: Dawson Leery, Joey Potter, Pacey Witter, and Jen Lindley. But for season 2, two more central characters entered the fray: siblings Jack and Andie McPhee. Each quickly found romance with a member of the group, cementing their status.
Jack and Andie move to Capeside, Massachusetts, from Rhode Island following the death of their older brother, Tim. Their mother’s mental health has deteriorated with her grief, while their father isn’t around at all. Despite a rocky start, Andie and Jack soon begin to think of Capeside as home.
Both became regular cast members, though Smith stayed on longer
In Dawson’s Creek Season 2, Smith and Monroe were credited as “special guest stars,” despite appearing in 20 and 21 out of 22 episodes, respectively. Both actors were made regulars for season 3, though Monroe only appeared in the first few episodes before her character was written out of season 4.
After Dawson’s Creek, Monroe secured a recurring role in Criminal Minds. She also appeared in series such as Castle, Hart of Dixie, and 13 Reasons Why. Smith, who remained a regular cast member through the finale, starred in the short-lived drama Life Unexpected. He also recurred on series like Charmed, The Fosters, and Riverdale.
‘Dawson’s Creek’ fans argued whether Jack and Andie were twins
Like many TV series, Dawson’s Creek played a little fast and loose with its timeline. Pacey, Joey, Dawson, and Jen are sophomores in season 1 and, when Jack and Andie join, they remain that way throughout all of season 2. But with Andie and Jack in the same classes, some fans believed they were twins.
While there isn’t an official record of this answer, it seems as though they weren’t twins but only siblings who ended up in the same grade. A Wikipedia user cited an old newsletter from the official Dawson’s Creek website that Jack is older. And in the season 4 episode episode “Future Tense,” Andie calls herself “the older sibling,” but it’s clearly a joke.
Monroe and Kerr were both significantly older than their characters
While Andie and Jack’s ages during the series are up for interpretation, those of the actors portraying them aren’t. Like most of the young stars on Dawson’s Creek, Monroe and Kerr were older than the character they played. But even more so than the likes of James Van Der Beek and the others in the core group.
When Smith first appeared as Jack in Dawson’s Creek Season 2, he was 26 — a full decade older than his character. Even when the show jumped ahead five years in the finale, Smith was 30, while Jack was in his mid-20s. But Monroe is even older. She was 29 when she began playing Andie, a high school sophomore.
