‘Dawson’s Creek’: The Writers Had to ‘Rewrite the Show’ After 1 Cast Member’s Drunken Night Out
The cast of Dawson’s Creek has been pretty candid about the fact that working on the show was hard work. Long days and long nights on set often left the actors feeling like they needed to decompress. One way that the cast would blow off stream was going out to the local bars. But one cast member took things a bit too far one night and ended up changing the trajectory of the show.
Where was ‘Dawson’s Creek’ filmed?
Unlike other popular shows that were filmed in big cities like New York or Los Angeles, Dawson’s Creek was actually filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. This meant that the cast was able to truly bond as they were the only show consistently filming there at that time. It also meant that they didn’t have to deal with a never-ending media circus at all times, even though they did deal with reporters on occasion. Of course, filming in Wilmington also meant there wasn’t too much to do, thus the cast liked to go out to bars fairly often.
Which ‘Dawson’s Creek’ cast member had a wild night out?
Busy Phillips, who was cast as Audrey Liddell in Season 5 and later became a series regular in Season 6, recalled that she had her fair share of tipsy nights while working on Dawson’s Creek. “It was a different time back then,” Phillips shared in an interview with Wendy Williams. “I had my moments, especially when I was on the Creek where I liked to booze it up you know.”
Continuing on, Phillips shared that after one drunken night, she sustained a pretty serious injury that led to the Dawson’s Creek writers having to rewrite the show to adjust for her injury. “When I was on Dawson’s Creek I got so drunk one night that I dislocated my knee in a bar,” Phillips recalled. “I’m not kidding you guys, And I got taken to the emergency room and I mean it was not on Entertainment Tonight. It was not on anything, yeah. And literally, they had to rewrite the show so that I was like laying down. I’m like I’m sitting down for two weeks.”

Phillips shared that things escalated when her parents learned of her injury and her mom flew out to Wilmington to have a serious talk with her about whether or not she had an issue with alcohol. “My mom flew out the first flight and she showed up, and I wasn’t a teenager I was 21 or 22 at the time and making tons of money,” the Dawson’s Creek alum revealed. “But my mom showed up and she was like ‘Look at me. What’s going on? Like we need to, you know, put the kibosh on this. Do you need some help, like what’s happening?’ I was like ‘No, I got a little crazy.'”
It seems like Phillips, like her Dawson’s Creek character, had a few wild nights every now and again. Fortunately, she was OK even if the writers had to adjust the script on her behalf.
