Dax Shepard Says Kristen Bell Doesn’t Kiss Him Like Adam Brody in ‘Nobody Wants This’
Dax Shepard was in for a big surprise when he watched Nobody Wants This, the Netflix rom-com series starring his wife, Kristen Bell. Shepard, 49, learned just how good Bell, 44, was at kissing when he watched her on-screen smooch with co-star Adam Brody.
Shepard ‘didn’t even know’ Bell ‘could kiss’ like she does in ‘Nobody Wants This’
For the uninitiated, Bell and Brody’s characters, Joanne and Noah, shared a romantic kiss on the streets of Los Angeles, California, in Nobody Wants This Season 1 Episode 2: “A Shiksa Walks Into a Temple.” Joanne even later described it to her sister, Morgan, played by Succession alum Justine Lupe, as one of the best kisses of her life.
Watching the scene Shepard realized Bell’s never kissed him like that. (They married in 2013 after meeting in 2007.) “My friend…we watched that scene together, the kissing scene, which I’d argue is the very best kissing scene ever, ever put on film,” he told People at the New Yorker Festival.
“And my best friend, Aaron, from childhood, he goes, ‘Does she ever kiss you like that?’” Shepard recalled. His response? “‘No, I didn’t even know she could kiss like that.’” Shepard, who shares two daughters with Bell, even said their own chemistry is “not as good as her and Brody.”
Shepard wanted Bell and Brody’s characters to kiss ‘so badly’ watching the premiere
Before Shepard’s comments on Nobody Wants This, Bell shared that the “Armchair Expert” podcast host even wanted Joanne and Noah to kiss while watching the series premiere.
“Who knows why our chemistry on screen—like once you add that lens—why it comes across the way it does,” Bell told eTalk of her and Brody. “But like, even I can acknowledge that watching it, I’m like, ‘Whoa, that’s hot.’ And my husband said the same thing, like watching the first episode, he was like, ‘Oh my God, I want you to kiss him so badly.’”
Noting the spark does indeed come across, Bell admitted there’s an element of “math” that goes into her and Brody’s on-screen chemistry. “I’m not trying to be reductive, but I think there’s a math to it,” she said.
“[…] You have to have two actors that know how to stare dopily into each other’s eyes,” she continued. “And you have to have the confidence to expand that, and really sit in the anticipatory value before the kiss, which I think is really important.”
“But then beyond that,” Bell added, “I guess whether or not people actually wanna see you end up with someone is a crap shoot.”
‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 2 is coming
Bell and Brody’s onscreen chemistry—and probably a steamy lip lock or two—will continue in Nobody Wants This Season 2. Netflix renewed the series shortly after season 1 premiered and quickly made its way to the streamer’s top 10 TV shows. According to Tudum, season 2 is slated to premiere in 2025.
As for what’s next for Joanne and Noah after a quintessential rom-com-style ending to season 1 —read: they end up together—even the cast’s not sure what’s ahead for the couple.
“‘I put you first. Everything else will work itself out, but I’m saying that you are my priority,’” Noah essentially told Joanne, according to Brody. “In the light of day, will he still feel that way? I don’t know,” the actor added. “It’s an open question.”
Whatever happens, Nobody Wants This fans—and probably Shepard—will be there rooting for Joanne and Noah.
