‘Deadpool 3’ Is ‘Ramping Up’ and Could Hit Theaters as Early as October 2022
It has almost been two years since Ryan Reynolds released Deadpool 2, and the actor has finally revealed that a third installment is in the works. Reynolds has not spilled too many details about the upcoming project, but it looks like it could hit theaters as early the fall of 2022. So what else is ahead for the Merc with the Mouth?
Reynolds confirms ‘Deadpool 3’ is underway
Deadpool’s fate hung in the balance after Disney acquired the rights to the character from Fox. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding his introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but at least we know that a third installment is on the way.
According to We Got This Covered, Reynolds recently revealed that development on Deadpool 3 is underway at Marvel studios. Reynolds and his team are still ironing out the details, but it looks like the film might be out a lot sooner than expected.
“Yeah we’re working on it right now with the whole team. We’re over at Marvel [Studios] now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It’s kinda crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it,” Reynolds shared.
Insider Jeremy Conrad followed that up by saying development is “ramping up” for the film on Twitter. He added that it would not be a huge shocker if Deadpool 3 was released sometime in October of 2022.
That would make a four-year gap between the second and third installments of Deadpool. That is a much longer wait than most fans expected, but at least we know that Disney is moving forward with the franchise with Reynolds at the helm.
Is Reynolds facing pushback?
So far, most sources have agreed that Disney is okay with giving Deadpool 3 an R-rating, keeping in-step with the previous two movies. But a different insider now claims that Disney is having second thoughts about the rating.
The studio has not said anything about Deadpool 3’s rating, but it sounds like they might want to water him down and keep things PG-13. This would make the film fall in line with the rest of the movies in the MCU – though it will likely anger fans.
To make things even more complicated, Reynolds reportedly wants full control over the creative direction of Deadpool 3. This is something no other actor in the MCU has, and Marvel president Kevin Feige is apparently having trouble giving up control.
Luckily, Disney and Marvel have not made any final decisions on the project, so there is plenty of time for everyone to get on the same page. While fans will probably enjoy Deadpool’s introduction either way, it would be nice to see him in his usual R-rated format.
Will Wolverine pop up?
Although the project is still in development, fans are already theorizing which characters might pop up in Deadpool 3. Nothing official has been confirmed, but there are a few faces fans would love to see in the film.
At the top of everyone’s list is Wolverine, but that is only assuming Hugh Jackman would return one last time to reprise the iconic role.
Reynolds poked fun at Jackman throughout the first two movies, setting up a friendly rivalry between their characters. Wolverine, of course, would be less of a threat to Deadpool, but it would be amazing to see their bromance unfold.
That said, Jackman has been very adamant about not returning as Wolverine in any future movies. And now that Deadpool is a part of the MCU, having him reprise the superhero would likely lead to future appearances down the road.
These are the top villains for ‘Deadpool 3’
Aside from Wolverine, Deadpool 3 will likely feature a brand new villain to face off with the Merc with the Mouth. And if producers cannot secure Jackman for a cameo, Daken would be another great choice.
Daken is a child of Itsu and Wolverine and shares similar powers like his father. This includes the ability to heal quickly, superhuman strength, and retractable claws.
Speaking of mutants, another viable option for a villain is Mister Sinister. He is one of the most well-known villains in the X-Men comics, so introducing him in Deadpool 3 would be a great way to bring mutants into the MCU.
Marvel has not announced when Deadpool 3 will hit theaters. The next movie in the lineup is Black Widow, which is due out on May 1.
