What is ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation’?

A spinoff of a teen drama that aired from 1979 to 1986, Degrassi: The Next Generation is a program that followed students of the fictional Degrassi High School as they dealt with issues such as love, body image, mental illness, and death.

The show premiered in 2001 and quickly became a fan-favorite for its storytelling, cast, and ability to explore real-life challenges that teenagers tend to experience.

Degrassi: The Next Generation ran for 14 seasons before ending in 2015, when it was canceled. However, another incarnation, Degrassi: Next Class, began the next year, lasting four seasons before it also got canceled.

There was a sort of reunion in 2018

It might not be what fans were expecting, but there was a quasi-reunion in 2018, when Degrassi actor-turned-rapper Drake tapped the cast for his “I’m Upset” music video.

In it, Drake, who starred on the show as Jimmy Brooks from its 2001 debut to 2009, attends his 10-year high school reunion at Degrassi.

There, he reunites with most of his former co-stars, including Shane Kippel (Gavin “Spinner” Mason), Lauren Collins (Paige Michalchuk), Adamo Ruggiero (Marco), Miriam McDonald (Emma), and Manuella “Manny” Santos (Cassandra “Cassie” Steele). They spend the evening partying together before (another) tragedy occurs, forcing them to flee the school.

The video was a big hit, as you can imagine, going viral on social media and ultimately amassing over 100 million views on YouTube.

Will there ever be an official ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation’ revival with the original cast members?

Based on the hype and success the “I’m Upset” video earned, it’s obvious that people are still into the show. But will there ever be a revival?

“Never say never,” McDonald said in a later interview with E! News. “We couldn’t have predicted this video was going to come along. Who knows what the next stop on this crazy train we’re on is going to be.”

Kippel added in the same interview that he believes his former co-stars would be game to reprise their roles. “I don’t think there would be anyone out there that if there was an opportunity to do some sort of reboot in some sort of form, whatever form that may be, I don’t think anyone would be quick to turn that down!” he said.

But so far, there aren’t any official plans to revive the show. Maybe one day, though.
