Demi Lovato Comes out as Non-Binary, Says They Were ‘Ignoring My Truth’
Demi Lovato recently talked about their sexuality in their documentary series, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil. They’re talking more about their journey on their podcast and have come out as non-binary. This is what the former Disney star had to say about being non-binary and their pronouns.
Demi Lovato comes out as non-binary
The singer posted a video on Instagram on May 19, making a big announcement. “Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and some self-reflective work, and through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them,” they said in the video.
“I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” they added.
The announcement is part of their podcast, 4D, with Demi Lovato, which is produced by OBB Sound. Lovato said they are having a conversation with author Alok Vaid-Menon for the first episode to talk about identity and how Lovato came into their truth.
Demi Lovato said Sam Smith helped lead them to their realization
Lovato said they talked to Sam Smith about being non-binary and having so many questions for them. Smith then recommended they go to Vaid-Menon’s poetry show to learn more.
“There’s a visceral reaction in me that was screaming, ‘This resonates with you.’ And it was the first time in so long that I heard someone else speak my truth, and then realize that’s my truth too,” Lovato told Vaid-Menon.
“Whereas like in 2018, when I overdosed, I feel like the reason that happened was because I was ignoring my truth, and I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists or team members or this or that,” they continued. “Or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy feminine pop star in the leotard and look a certain way.”
Lovato said if they dress femme presenting, it doesn’t mean they identify as a woman
Lovato said they learned to live their truth. Vaid-Menon said non-binary means you’re not exclusively a man or a woman. Lovato and Vaid-Menon then said gender isn’t linked to what people look like.
“I’ve had thoughts where I’m like; there might be a time where I wanna wear a full wig,” they said. “There might be a time where I, you know, wanna dress completely femme presenting, and that doesn’t mean that in that moment I’m identifying as a woman. It just means that’s what I wanna wear in that moment.”
Lovato said their pronouns are “they/them” and accepts some people will slip up saying “her/she” as they get used to this change. But they want people to make an effort and not make people afraid of messing up.
