Demi Lovato Explains Why She and Ex Wilmer Valderrama Are No Longer “In Each Other’s Lives”
After spending six years together, many fans were left heartbroken when Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama called it quits in 2016.
But despite going their separate ways, the exes never stopped caring for each other as they continued to love and support one another through many ups and downs in life.
While fans thought Lovato and Valderrama would always remain close, it turns out that their relationship changed drastically over the years, with the singer recently revealing that they’re no longer part of each other’s lives.
A look back at Lovato and Valderrama relationship
Lovato may have dated her fair share of celebrities over the years, but her romance with Valderrama was one Lovatics all over the world couldn’t get enough of.
The pair first met in 2010 at the NCIS actor’s home while shooting a public service announcement for Vote Latino. Though their age gap was notable, the chemistry between the singer and the actor was undeniable.
While they initially kept their romance under wraps, Lovato and Valderrama went public in 2014, with the That’s 70’s Show alum making a cameo in his better half’s “Really Don’t Care” music video that same year.
As time went on, the pair fell more in love with each other, and marriage definitely seemed like a possibility after their connection proved to withstand even the lowest of lows.
During their relationship, Valderrama played a major role in Lovato’s ongoing experiences with addiction.
In fact, with every new year of sobriety, Lovato credited Valderrama for being her rock while she worked toward maintaining her health.
“I wish I could put into words how grateful I am for this man right here,” she wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post back in March 2015. “But my love has grown to a level that words could never possibly express how much this man completes me. He’s loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober… After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery… he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn’t be alive today without him.”
Lovato and Valderrama were picture-perfect exes at one point
Since it seemed like Lovato and Valderrama were going to be together forever, it was all the more shocking when they announced their breakup in 2016.
Though the split was mutual, Lovato later admitted that her own personal issues attributed to their split.
“The sparks never faded, but there are issues that I haven’t conquered yet that I know I won’t conquer if I’m relying on somebody else to take care of the loneliness,” she said in her 2018 documentary, Simply Complicated.
But despite no longer being romantically involved, the pair remained close friends — ultimately proving that their bond was just too strong to give up on.
Their lasting connection became more apparent in July 2018 when Valderrama rushed to be by Lovato’s side after she suffered an apparent drug overdose.
During her recovery, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer received immense support from her ex, who reportedly put his life on hold while she sought treatment.
The singer admits she’s no longer in touch with her ex
Though they remained close throughout her sobriety journey, Lovato recently revealed that her relationship with Valderrama has changed — noting that she’s no longer in touch with her ex.
“I’m really happy for him and I wish him nothing but the best, but we’re not in each other’s lives, haven’t spoken in a long time,” she recently told Harper’s Bazaar of where she currently stands with the actor, who got engaged to model Amanda Pacheco in January 2020.
“But I think I needed that because I needed to learn to be okay on my own,” the singer continued. “When you get into a relationship with somebody at that young of an age and then you spend six years with somebody, you don’t really get to learn about yourself.”
Being with Valderrama has taught Lovato a lot about love, and though things didn’t work out between them, she’s still looking forward to the future of her romantic life.
“When I imagine my life in the future, I don’t say, ‘I’m looking for a man who I want to have two or three kids with.’ I think it could be so much fun to share children with a woman,” Will & Grace actress explains. “So I don’t know what my future will look like, and I’m open to anything. People always ask me, ‘What’s your type?’ And I’m like, ‘Have you seen my history?’ There is no type. It is solely off connection. I wish I could say, ‘I only date attractive people.’ But I don’t.”
