Demi Lovato recently blasted gender reveal parties

Gender reveal parties are a common practice for expecting parents. But as Lovato stated on Instagram, they can be harmful to members of the transgender community.

Lovato shared a series of graphics on Instagram, describing the negative effect gender reveals can have. She wrote wrote, “This is not about being politically correct, it’s about being correct. The refusal to acknowledge this stems from a misunderstanding of what transphobia is.”

A part of the caption, which is a repost from gender-nonconforming activist Alok Menon, continues, “Transphobia is not just prejudice or violence against an individual trans person, it is a belief system that presumes non-trans people to be more ‘natural’ than trans people. Only individual people can self determine their gender.”

As a follow-up to the post, an insider confirmed to Hollywood Life, “Demi is very committed to be an ally to the trans community. She feels a real responsibility to speak up because she has this huge platform, she knows the impact she can have. And, she identifies as queer.”

The insider continued, “This is her community, it’s personal for her. The past few years she’s made a big effort to learn more and to understand the trans experience more. And the more she learns, the more she sees all that needs to change.”

Demi Lovato hopes to influence change with her post

Lovato hopes to continue using her platform to create change and influence the lives of others.

The insider added, “She wants to open people’s eyes and hearts,’ the source explained. ‘Demi is not afraid of any sort of backlash. She will continue to push for trans rights and to use her platform to help educate people. Demi’s a hopeful person, and she does believe that things can change and get better. But she knows if no one ever speaks up, then nothing will change. And she’s not afraid to be the person that speaks up.”
