Demi Lovato Reveals Why She’s Not Friends With Wilmer Valderrama, Joe Jonas, and Other Exes
Once a relationship ends, there are a couple of ways things can go. You can try to salvage the good and become friends or you can run in the opposite direction and never look back. For Demi Lovato, it appears that she has chosen the latter. In a new interview, the “Sorry Not Sorry” star revealed that she has zero contact with her exes — not even her longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama or her childhood flame Joe Jonas.
Why Demi Lovato doesn’t talk to her exes
Lovato fessed up in a recent interview on Jameela Jamil‘s I Weigh podcast. Explaining her reason for not keeping in contact with her exes, the “I Love Me” singer suggested that there’s not really a point to it.
“I kind of used to have this mentality that if I had a negative experience with someone, I always needed to mend it or I always needed to make things right, and the fact of the matter is, I’m not really friends with any of my exes today because I had to realize that that wasn’t healthy either,” she said.
Lovato explained that at one point, she tried to hold on to at least a friendship with some of her exes because she was “afraid of fully letting go of people.”
“Now that I’ve been able to fully let go of people, you know, that is another thing that I had to learn when it comes to cutting toxic people out of your life — if they’re an ex, it’s for a reason,” Lovato continued.
A look back at Demi Lovato’s romances
The “Sober” singer famously dated Jonas in 2010 after years of being friends. He told Vulture that they split after a month due in part to Lovato’s struggles with addiction.
“I felt like I needed to take care of her, but at the same time, I was living a lie because I wasn’t happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her because she needed help. I couldn’t express any of that, of course, because I had a brand to protect,” Jonas explained.
Even though the romance fizzled, Lovato proved that there was no bad blood when she congratulated Jonas on his eventual engagement to Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, whom he later married and with whom he is allegedly expecting a child.
The same year of their split, Lovato began dating Valderrama. They were together for about six years before calling it quits in 2016. But despite the breakup, Lovato and Valderrama appeared to keep in contact.
The actor was even by her side when she relapsed in 2018 and supported her through recovery. Though they have since ceased communication, Lovato did have some thoughts on his recent engagement to model Amanda Pacheco.
Demi Lovato was recently linked to someone new
In March, Lovato sparked romance rumors with actor Max Ehrich. Neither of them has commented on the speculation. However, the “Sober” crooner told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview published on April 14 that she is single. Going on, Lovato noted that she is not necessarily looking and has instead decided to enjoy her independence.
