Demi Lovato said she learned an ‘important’ lesson from her relationship with Max Ehrich

Lovato and Ehrich met in March 2020. Although it’s unclear exactly how the pair met, Ehrich had a fascination with Lovato that he expressed via Twitter in 2011. In March 2020, the couple made their first public appearance via Instagram when Lovato walked in on Ehrich’s live performance. Following their initial video, Lovato and Ehrich’s relationship played out on social media until the engagement dissolved in September 2020.

Since their split, Lovato has kept mum about the details surrounding her relationship with Ehrich. However, during an interview with Jenna Bush Hager for Today, Lovato said her ex taught her a valuable lesson about herself after they broke up. Lovato also shared that her experience with Ehrich and other battles she faced this year gave her significant material for her upcoming album.

“I think the most important thing that I’ve learned is how much I am OK with myself and loving myself,” Lovato said. “It wasn’t until this year that I really started exploring the things that bring joy to my life in little ways.”

Demi Lovato says creating a song after her breakup with Max Ehrich was ‘cathartic’ and ‘therapeutic’

Lovato and Ehrich ended their engagement after being together for six months. Before their split, the exes appeared in Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande’s video for “Stuck With You.” Instead of discussing the breakup publicly, Lovato decided to turn her pain into a new song. The “Skyscraper” performer released “Still Have Me” in October 2020, just one month after her split.

While the song came out shortly after her breakup, Lovato shared on Today that it was vital for her to work on music following the split. Lovato said music has always been how she’s dealt with challenging times, and the end of her engagement was no exception.

“When I write my songs when I go to the studio and record them, it’s a very cathartic and therapeutic experience for me,” Lovato shared.  “Anytime I go through something, especially when I don’t say things publicly or comment on certain situations, I just let my music comment on it.”

Demi Lovato felt ‘unconditionally loved’ by Max Ehrich before their split

Before things turned sour between them, Lovato and Ehrich were seemingly in love. Lovato had several exes before her engagement to Ehrich, but she shared on Instagram that she felt she met her right match in Ehrich. Lovato showed off her ring from Ehrich and shared how excited she was about their future marriage in July 2020, per Glamour

“@maxehrich—I knew I loved you the moment I met you. It was something I can’t describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too. I’ve never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all. You never pressure me to be anything other than myself. And you make me want to be the best version of myself. I’m honored to accept your hand in marriage. I love you more than a caption could express, but I’m ecstatic to start a family and life with you. I love you forever, my baby. My partner. Here’s to our future!!!!”
