Demi Lovato Told Ellen DeGeneres She Doesn’t Want Her Romantic Partners to ‘Fix’ Her ‘Issues’
Demi Lovato seemed absolutely in love with Max Ehrich. After just a few short months of dating, the couple got engaged. But issues came up when old tweets and videos showed Ehrich trying to get into relationships with multiple celebrities.
Now, the couple’s split, and Lovato’s single once again. Back in March 2020, right before dating Ehrich, Lovato talked to Ellen DeGeneres about her single life and what she wants. Here’s what she said.

Lovato has been romantically linked to a number of celebrities, though her longest-running relationship was certainly with Wilmer Valderrama. At the beginning of March 2020, though, Lovato was living the single life — and she appeared to be loving it. She was focusing on herself, her health, and her music when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Back in 2018, Lovato spent time in the hospital due to a drug overdose. And when she appeared on the comedian’s talk show, she noted she started focusing on her faith and relationship with God instead of romance. She even got a tattoo of an angel shedding dark wings and being pulled up by three doves.
“I have grown a lot spiritually,” Lovato said. “I started going to church, and I just re-found my relationship with God. So that, to me, was representative of the Holy Trinity.”
Lovato and Ehrich broke off their engagement in September 2020
While Lovato seemed happy and healthy when visiting DeGeneres, it seems her life was about to change drastically without her knowing it. That same month she appeared on the show, rumors swirled that she was dating Max Ehrich. In May 2020, Ehrich and Lovato were officially together.
Lovato spoke very highly of Ehrich throughout their relationship. “We started dating. We immediately went into quarantine,” Lovato told The Morning Mashup. “I knew I loved him the night I met him. So a week later we went into quarantine. I was like, ‘Look, we’re quarantining together. Um, cause I love you.'”
Unfortunately, red flags surfaced. In mid-September 2020, fans started posting screenshots that showed Ehrich “liking” and commenting on social media posts from other celebrity women in the past. And he seemed to have a serious affinity for Selena Gomez. He posted text posts and a video explaining why he totally had a thing for the singer.
Now, Lovato and Ehrich have broken off their engagement. It seems distance was a major factor in their decision to split, and they both want to focus on their careers going forward.
Lovato told DeGeneres she has to fight her own battles in relationships
While Lovato is likely feeling down about her split, she’ll certainly be OK. During her interview with DeGeneres, she explained that she’s learning to fight her own battles in romance, and she doesn’t need anyone else to complete her.
“I was on dating apps for awhile, but as I’ve spent some time with myself over the past couple months, I realized that I am the type of person that will find any way to regulate when I’m sad or lonely,” she explained. “I have to fight those battles on my own, and I can’t let somebody come in and fix those issues for me.”
Lovato then added that she was spending her Saturday nights by herself and loving it. “Laughing, taking baths …,” she continued.
Now that Lovato and Ehrich are no longer together, it seems she’ll have plenty more time to pamper herself at home. We wish her well in all of her future endeavors!
