Denzel Washington, like many celebrities, attended Sean “Diddy” Combs’ extravagant parties. People worked hard to get invites and snuck in if they had to. Though there was high demand to get in, some celebrities reportedly knew that it was best to leave early. According to actor and comedian Brandon T. Jackson, Washington told him it was best to get out of Diddy’s parties before things took a turn.

Denzel Washington told Brandon T. Jackson to leave Diddy’s parties early

Jackson is one of many who scored an invite to Diddy’s parties. He admitted he attended but he always left early, following advice Washington gave him.

“Denzel always told me, we be at the parties, you leave 30 minutes before the devil gets there. OK?” Jackson said in an interview. “When he would say that, I will always remember that Denzel would leave the parties early, and I followed Denzel out. I’m out. You see what I’m saying?”

Jackson believed that this way, he could attend the parties and leave with his integrity intact.

“Because when you leave 30 minutes before the devil get there — there ain’t nothing wrong with going to the parties, even Christ partied with the sinners, you know what I mean?” he said. “But when you leave 30 minutes before the devil get there, you are able to have your integrity.”

Denzel Washington wasn’t the only person who knew to leave Diddy’s parties early

According to a source who attended some of Diddy’s notorious bashes, many celebrities followed this advice. While they still attended the parties, they left early, before things took a turn. The parties often stretched to 7 in the morning; many celebrities left by 2 or 3 a.m.

“Girls would start to lose their clothes — that was the signal for people to leave,” a source told Us Weekly.

The source noted that the vibe of the parties shifted palpably after people cleared out.

“What happened before 2 a.m. pales in comparison to what happened at 5 a.m.,” the source said.

Diddy shared what his parties were like

In 2002, Diddy said that one of his main priorities when hosting a party was getting as many women on the invite list as possible.

“This is what you need to do,” Diddy said on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, per Vibe Magazine. “Women. Beautiful women, of course. Beautiful men for the ladies, of course … You need to give the ladies what they need, too. Take care of your women. You can’t force the situation.”

He wanted his parties to be sweaty and “kinky.”

“We need alcohols,” he said. “You need some water. I don’t know if guys have noticed this, but a lot of ladies drink water at parties. So if you don’t have what they need, they gon’ leave. Gotta keep ’em there. You need locks on the doors… It’s a little kinky but, you know… rock with me. You need a lot of heat. Don’t have no air conditioning. Heat affects the alcohol and it also affects… you know, everybody gets a little bit more comfortable and loose. It builds up a nice little sweat.”
