Actor Devon Sawa wasn’t supposed to make it past season 1 of Chucky. But he quickly became a bit of a series regular, as Chucky’s showrunner kept finding new ways to bring him back on the show. However, Chucky wouldn’t make it past season 3, with the television horror show eventually being canceled. Still, Sawa doubted audiences have seen the last of the killer doll.

In addition to the Final Destination series, Sawa became a part of another long-running horror franchise when he was cast in Chucky. Working with the high-maintenance doll added Sawa to the Chucky mythology. Additionally, it also gave him the opportunity to flex his acting range, since he played multiple characters on the show. Sawa might’ve portrayed even more characters if the series wasn’t cut short. Showrunner Don Mancini was brimming with ideas for Chucky season 4 when USA Network and the Syfy channel pulled its plug. Mancini mourned the show along with its fans, but reassured that Chucky would return somewhere down the line like all horror monsters do.

“I’m heartbroken over the news that Chucky won’t be coming back for a fourth season but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” Mancini once said according to Deadline. “I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew — the best in the business — and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS comes back.”

In an interview with Forbes, Sawa shared his own perspective on the series’ cancellation, and it wasn’t too different from Mancini’s.

“If I was in Vegas, I’d bet the house that you’re going see some more Chucky stuff. It sells a lot of t-shirts, cereal, and lunch boxes, so one way or another, we’re getting more Chucky content. Am I going to be in it? I hope so. I have not heard one way or another,” Sawa said. “I think there’s a changing of the guard as far as producers and whatnot. I don’t know the full story. They don’t tell me a lot. I hope and pray that I go back because it is, along with Final Destination and Idle Hands and the Stan video, one of those projects that I put up on the shelf, and I’m very proud of.”

Sawa, who’d love to explore projects outside of horror, was under the impression that he wouldn’t have much longevity in the show. He was originally cast as twin brothers Lucas and Logan Wheeler, who’d have limited screen time before being disposed of by Chucky.

“I’m glad I didn’t just because season one, I mean, it would’ve changed a lot,”Sawa said in an interview with CBR. “Season 1, I got the audition. I knew it was these two brothers, and they were dying, and that’s it. I knew I was dying in episode one, and I knew I was dying in Episode 7, and so you’re just at peace with it. You’re like, okay, so I’m in these episodes, I die here. I’m going to have fun with this season. I’m going to go up to Toronto. I’m going to kick a**, and that’s it, and I’ll go find something after that.”

Sawa’s expectations of the series might’ve made his return even more rewarding.

“So when [Mancini] approached me after I died and said, ‘Hey, would you like to come back next year?’ It was flattering and awesome,” Sawa said. “Now it’s a little different. Now it’s on the end of Season 2. It was like, oh, well, I’m probably coming back. It’s been a treat. It’s been a treat that he does this.”
