‘Dexter: New Blood’: 3 Traditions Dexter Passed Down to Harrison
The theme of Dexter: New Blood was “fathers and sons” and fans got to see this theme play out in a multitude of ways. Dexter Morgan reunited with his son Harison after a decade apart. Dexter revealed his darkest secrets to his son in the Dexter revival, and tried to pass down a few traditions from his own father Harry. Luckily Harrison probably won’t uphold all of these traditions.
Dexter taught Harrison to blend in with everyone else
Dexter Morgan is very talented at blending in with his surroundings and even appearing interested in things he couldn’t care less about. This is something his foster father Harry began to teach him at a young age. Harry taught Dexter to do things that “normal” people enjoy so he wouldn’t stand out, liking going to high school dances and smiling for pictures.
In Dexter: New Blood, Harrison isn’t quite as awkward as teenage Dexter used to be. He clearly has an interest in dating and activities such as wrestling. Stil, Dexter teaches Harrison to blend in and even seem harmless by passing on a dorky tradition. He makes Harrison wear an ugly Christmas sweater to Angela and Audrey’s house. Dexter employs many of these routines and traditions to help himself fit in, such as bringing donuts to his coworkers or joining a bowling team.
Dexter showed Harrison how to shoot a gun in ‘Dexer: New Blood’
Just like the sweaters, Dexter gave Harrison a gun to help him fit in. Harrison notes that all of his classmates have a rifle. Dexter also teaches his son how to shoot, which is something Harry did for him. When Dexter was a teenager, Harry took him out to hunt animals in an attempt to help control his dark urges. However, Harrison never goes hunting. Although he is a better shot than Dexter, he probably won’t be using guns much after leaving his rifle behind in Iron Lake.
Harrison learns the Code in ‘Dexter: New Blood’
As Dexter: New Blood progresses, Dexter slowly reveals more and more about his own darkness to his son. Eventually he tells Harrison about the Code Harry taught him. At first, Harrison seems to see his father as a hero for saving innocent lives by taking out serial killers. However, he is disturbed when he watches Dexter kill Kurt.
Harrison is even more horrified when he realizes that Dexter doesn’t always protect the innocent. Dexter kills Logan in the finale as he is escaping from jail. Harrison kills his father rather than letting him escape Iron Lake.
Although Harrison doesn’t seem to have the same uncontrollable desire to kill as Dexter, some fans think he may keep the Code alive in some way. A fan on Reddit proposed that Dexter: New Blood could continue with Harrison trying to “be the kind of vigilante that he initially thought Dexter was.”
