Jennifer Carpenter thought she’d said goodbye to Dexter in 2013. She’s back in Dexter: New Blood but that’s not her first reunion with the serial killer drama. Even before the Showtime revival series, Carpenter couldn’t escape her fictional adopted murderer brother. In a recent interview, Carpenter said the very next show she did reused old props from Dexter.

Carpenter was a guest on the Dexter: New Blood Wrap Up podcast on Oct. 5. Reflecting on the original series, Carpenter revealed what Dexter items turned up on her next show. Dexter: New Blood airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Showtime, and we’ll have lots more with the cast and creators here on Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

What shows was Jennifer Carpenter on after ‘Dexter’?

Immediately after Dexter ended, Carpenter starred on Limitless, the CBS series sequel to the Bradley Cooper movie. Carpenter played Rebecca Harris, the FBI agent in charge of NZT user Brian Finch (Jake McDorman). After that, Carpenter appeared in The Enemy Within, but it was Limitless that pillaged the Dexter prop vaults.

“You know what’s funny, I did a show after Dexter called Limitless,” Carpenter said on the Dexter: New Blood Wrap Up podcast. “I was looking at a file and it was all of our Dexter props. It was all of our Dexter paperwork. I found a letter I had handwritten to some character.”

The ‘Dexter’ props didn’t go to waste

On Dexter, Carpenter played Deb Morgan, a Miami police officer. It turns out Dexter sold all the police department props to Limitless. As long as they weren’t in closeup, viewers would never know that the paperwork originally pertained to Dexter. And Limitless had its share of paperwork too. Every week, Brain would use NZT to outthink a new case. Too bad they never had him use his powers on Dexter.

“They had bought our truck to use as their office files and things,” Carpenter said. “I was transported back and felt like this stuff is precious, what’s it doing here? Am I being typecast?”

Jennifer Carpenter misses the old set on ‘Dexter: New Blood’

Dexter: New Blood is quite different from the original series. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) has moved to Iron Lake, New York. He’s not a cop anymore, and he’s not even using his real name. Now, he’s Jim Lindsay and Deb is only a voice in his head. Looking back at the Miami-set series, Carpenter misses the Miami PD set.

“I think spending all that time in the bullpen, what we called it, it just fed the show,” Carpenter said. “A lot of items there would be a turnaround where it’s going to take 30 minutes and I would opt to stay there because our crew became our family. We knew everything about their business and you all know absolutely everything about mine.”
