Dexter New: Blood, a revival of Showtime‘s hit serial killer drama, tells the story of Dexter Morgan in the years after he faked his death and went into hiding. The show, set in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New, York, finds him living a normal life under the alias Jim Lindsay — until his son, Harrison, shows up and throws him off course.

The series premiered on Showtime in November of 2021 and exploded to become the most popular show on the network, receiving praise for its storytelling and character performances. The finale was designed as a wrap-up to Dexter’s character. But the show was so successful that a second season seems possible. Keep scrolling to find out everything we know about the possibility of Dexter: New Blood Season 2.

Has ‘Dexter: New Blood’ been renewed?

As of writing, Showtime has not said whether there will be another season. In an interview ahead of the finale, Showtime’s President of Entertainment Gary Levine said they were waiting until the season concluded to address the topic of another season.

“Dexter is a limited series and any further discussions of Dexter will have to wait until we finish airing the limited series and see where we are with our stories and our characters,” he told Deadline. “Dexter was really designed to have a proper conclusion to the series, and I believe we will deliver that in the best possible way.”

The show ran until Jan. 9, concluding with Dexter’s death at Harrison’s hands. While the ending officially closes his chapter of the story, it also presents an opportunity to build on Harrison’s character as he deals with his own darkness.

The creator and showrunner of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ is open to the idea of new episodes

Showtime has to decide whether there will be more episodes. But creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips has already thrown his support behind the idea.

“This show is a huge asset,” he explained to Deadline. “When people start bingeing this after the finale, I’m confident the numbers will continue to go up. It’s up to Showtime to make the call to me if they want more. If they ask me if I’d like to make a continuation of this, I would say yes. I have a lot of things going on but I would drop everything for this and say yes in one second.”

His ideas for new episodes

Phillips said he’s particularly interested in exploring what happens to Harrison in the aftermath of Dexter’s death.

“Harrison is such a complicated character and he has within him the seeds of the dark passenger,” he continued. “He’s capable. Look at that takedown of Dexter in the end, what’s in Harrison is that he has to kill this man.”

Asked whether Dexter could ever come back as Harrison’s conscience, Phillips was unsure. He thinks it’s “either the best idea in the world or the most obvious idea.”

“We’re talking about a hypothetical show here,” he told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about the possibility of Dexter’s return. “My instinct is maybe once just to charge up Harrison and charge up the audience or maybe never. It’s either the best idea in the world or the most obvious idea in the world. If Showtime says yes and I can put together a writing room, that’s a question I’ll bring up to them. Right now, I just don’t know.”

In the meantime, fans can find Dexter: New Blood now on Showtime.
