‘Dexter: New Blood’ Star Jamie Chung Shares How Her Character ‘Shakes Things Up’ for Dexter

Dexter Morgan may have been able to escape in the original series, but his past will come back to haunt him in 'Dexter: New Blood.' Jamie Chung says her character, a true-crime podcaster, will disrupt his world as she investigates certain criminal cases.

Jamie Chung got a job a lot of people would kill for when she was cast in the Dexter revival. Titled Dexter: New Blood, the show begins years after the events in the original series finale. Chung has joined the cast as Molly, a true-crime podcaster presumably reporting on those connected to infamous crimes. Chung says viewers can expect her to shake things up for Dexter (Michael C. Hall), who’s been in hiding since 2013.

What is ‘Dexter: New Blood’ about?

Dexter: New Blood continues the story of the infamous serial killer, picking up on his life a decade after he faked his death and fled Miami. He’s no longer living as Dexter Morgan but as Jim Lindsay. He’s in a small town in Northern New York called Iron Lake, where has a life with a girlfriend and career.

“He works at the fish and game store, surrounded by weapons of minor destruction and by the trophies of what other people have killed – deer heads and stuffed trout on the wall,” showrunner Clyde Phillips told Drama Quarterly of Dexter’s life.

“We also learn he’s got a new girlfriend who is the chief of police,” he continued. “He can use that accessibility to the police station to his advantage, because even though he’s had a monastic, abstinent life, this is Dexter and Dexter is going to kill people.”

Jamie Chung says her character will disrupt his ‘quiet world’

Chung, known for her roles in shows such as HBO’s Lovecraft Country, opened up about playing Molly in an interview with HollywoodLife.

“Molly is a confident, accomplished, and self-made journalist,” she told the website of her character. “She found a lot of success as a true-crime podcaster, and as I’ve mentioned before is new to the world of Dexter and you can imagine how that shakes things up in his quiet world.”

She continued, “She is sassy, unapologetic, and a damn good armchair detective. I also like to think that she adds a lot of color and fun to this revival series.” Chung also said that, as a big name in the true-crime world, Molly poses “a new threat to Dexter and his true identity.”

But she won’t be his only problem

The true villain of Dexter: New Blood is a man named Kurt Caldwell, played by Clancy Brown. According to Deadline, his character description says he’s an Iron Lake native and community figure.

He realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop,” the statement continues. “Powerful, generous, loved by everyone – he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for… God help you.

We’ll see how things pan out for Dexter, but it’s not sounding good for him. Watch Dexter: New Blood at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 7.
