‘Dexter’ Set Photo Featuring Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan Emerges

Jennifer Carpenter is officially coming back to 'Dexter.' After plenty of fan speculation, multiple outlets confirmed in July that she'll reprise her role as Debra Morgan, who famously died in the original series finale. Now, we're finally getting a look at her in character.

The excitement for the Dexter revival grows with every update on the show. Dexter was based on a book by Jeff Lindsay and followed the titular character as he hunted and killed violent offenders who went free. The revival series takes place 10 years after the events in the original series finale, following Dexter Morgan as he navigates life in a new city.

Now living in Upstate New York, he’s surrounded by different people. But fans can expect to see familiar faces too. That includes his sister Debra Morgan, played by Jennifer Carpenter. The actor was confirmed for Dexter Season 9 in July, and now we’re finally getting a look at her return.

A ‘Dexter’ set photo spotlights Jennifer Carpenter’s return

Filming for the revival started at the top of 2021, but it wasn’t until the middle of July when Carpenter’s return was confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter revealed the series would show Debra in flashbacks, given that she famously died in the original series finale.

The news came after John Lithgow (The Trinity Killer) disclosed in an interview with Deadline that both he and Carpenter had been filming for the show. However, there had been speculation about her return since March when she reportedly posted a now-deleted video showing her in Massachusetts, where the revival is filming.

As production continues, Dexter writer and producer Scott Reynolds shared a photo from the set. It shows him standing with his arm around Carpenter, who’s dressed just like Deb. The two are seen in front of balloons that read, “I [love] Dexter.” Captioning the image, Reynolds wrote, “Some Debra Morgan fun from the #Dexter set. We approve of the balloon’s message.”

Carpenter also marked her return to the show on Instagram, sharing a photo of her with Lithgow with her image warped. “After all these years we’re both EXACTLY the same! #dexter… I guess it does a BODY good! Whahahaa!!” she wrote. “#showtime #trinity #deb #seeyousoon.”

What else to expect from the ‘Dexter’ revival

As far as the plot, the official synopsis says it’s all about Dexter’s new life. “Set 10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami,” it reads.

We now know that Dexter is living in a small town called Iron Lake, where he’ll find an enemy in Clancy Brown’s Kurt Caldwell, the town’s “unofficial mayor.”

“He realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop,” reads his character description. “Powerful, generous, loved by everyone — he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”

The premiere of the ‘Dexter’ revival is just a few months away

The show will continue to film throughout the summer before moving to the editing stages. The goal is to release the revival in the fall of 2021.

“We have about five weeks to go,” Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) told Times Radio in June, via Digital Spy. “I think the whole shoot would have taken five months. It’s basically like we’re filming it as a 10-hour movie. It will be ten episodes, premiering at least in the States on Showtime on November 7.”
