Did You Spot This ‘Gilmore Girls’ Star in ‘Seinfeld’?
For Gilmore Girls fans, Scott Patterson will always be Luke Danes. He spent six years of his life portraying the surly diner owner and reprised the role again in 2016 on Netflix. Before he became a member of the Gilmore Girls cast, Patterson had a small guest role on Seinfeld. You won’t believe who he played.
Scott Patterson showed up in Seinfeld years before landing his role on Gilmore Girls
By the time Patterson showed up on the scene to audition for the role of Luke Danes, he was more or less done with Hollywood. Patterson once explained that he was so convinced that he wouldn’t get the part that he acted out in his audition. Patterson told Glamour that he acted irritated and annoyed in the audition because he was convinced the script was “too good.”
While Patterson may have felt like he was failing in Hollywood, he had had some success. He managed to land a role in one of TV’s biggest shows before he became a breakout star. Patterson portrayed one of Elaine Benes’ boyfriends in Seinfeld. His appearance occurred in one of the show’s most talked-about episodes.
Who did Scott Patterson play in Seinfeld?
Patterson appeared in the ninth episode of Seinfeld’s seventh season. In the episode, Patterson portrayed a man named Billy. Billy and Elaine had been casually dating when Elaine found out her preferred form of birth control was being taken off the market. Elaine set out to buy up as much stock of the product as humanly possible. She succeeded, but when it came time to use the sponge, she became discerning.
Patterson’s character spent some time sitting with Elaine, trying to convince her that he was “sponge-worthy.” In the end, Billy’s argument that he was successful and had just cleaned his bathroom was enough to prove his spongeworthiness. Fans last saw Patterson’s character walking into the bedroom with Elaine. He never reappeared in the show, though.
Scott Patterson isn’t the only major star who appeared in Seinfeld
Patterson wasn’t a well-known actor when he appeared on Seinfeld, but he would become one. Five years after appearing in Seinfeld, he landed a part on Gilmore Girls, and the rest is history. Patterson isn’t the only famed actor who appeared in Seinfeld before their big break. Several well-known actors had cameo roles on the series before landing their breakout parts.
Peter Krause, for example, appeared in Seinfeld in 1992. Krause went on to star in Six Feet Under and Parenthood. He also has a Gilmore Girls connection. Krause has been dating Lauren Graham, who portrayed Lorelai Gilmore, since 2010. Brian Cranston, Debra Messing, and Courtney Cox all had cameos on Seinfeld, too.
