‘Dirty Dancing’ Star Jennifer Grey Says Matthew Broderick Often Left Her in Tears at a Restaurant
Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey probably had some of the most exciting celebrity relationships. The actor counts Johnny Depp and Matthew Broderick among her loves. Although Grey’s career was flying high and she was engaged to be married to Broderick, she says there were some low moments in their relationship. Here’s what Grey said about sitting in a restaurant crying after having dinner with the Ferris Bueler’s Day Off star.

Grey and Broderick first met on the set of their 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. In her memoir Out of the Corner, she says she was taken by surprise when she began developing feelings for Broderick, as most of their scenes together weren’t until the end of the film and they played siblings. Grey says Broderick wasn’t like most actors. According to her, he acted more like a “grumpy grandpa” than an A-list actor, and he looked like he had “just rolled out of bed.” (Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox met in a similar way.)

Grey and Broderick dated for a few years, and she says they were “good together.” According to her, when things were good between them, they were “very, very good,” but when things were bad, the relationship was “awful.”
She says those “awful” moments would sometimes occur when they went out to eat. Grey and Broderick often went out to eat at a popular restaurant after a night out at the New York theatre. She says they were regulars, so they knew the waiters well. They also knew some of the regular diners. Since they were familiar with the people there, Grey says it was “awkward” when she would find herself in tears after dinner with Broderick. She says she would try to hide her face after something he said, and Broderick would hurry to get the check.
Grey says after she and Broderick broke up, one of the waiters told her he was tired of seeing her crying. “One of the waiters confessed to me that he was so sick of seeing me with tears running down my cheeks he’d wanted to punch Matthew out,” writes Grey.

Grey doesn’t remember exactly why each of those incidents brought her to tears. However, one situation she says came up often was Broderick’s admirers. According to Grey, he seemed to be involved with or at least talking to other women on the side. She says he would sometimes get calls from other women while they were together.
Grey says Broderick referred to one woman who contacted him as a “family friend.” According to her, he said the woman was obsessed with him, but he wasn’t interested in her. Grey later found out they were in a relationship. Although she saw red flags, Grey says she stayed because she wanted what she wanted. The couple eventually broke up after Grey suspected he was continuing to see other people.
