ZA/UM’s Disco Elysium: The Final Cut has taken a long road to get here, but the RPG video game will finally launch on Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles in October. The game follows a detective tasked with solving a murder in a large dystopian city. Players must interrogate the city’s residents and find clues to bring the murderer to justice using the detective’s wide range of skills. There’s plenty to explore in Disco Elysium, so how long does it take to finish the game?

‘Disco Elysium: The Final Cut’ added full voice acting, new quests, and more

ZA/UM first released Disco Elysium in October 2019, but the game wasn’t quite complete yet. A few months later, the studio unveiled a definitive version called The Final Cut, featuring plenty of extra content. For starters, the characters received full voice acting, making for an even more engaging story. In addition, ZA/UM added some new characters and expanded the map, plus made some visual improvements for current-gen consoles.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut also marked the creation of Hardcore Mode. The game has no combat, so ZA/UM built Hardcore Mode for players seeking a greater challenge. According to the Steam announcement, the mode increases the difficulty by limiting resources and upping prices. ZA/UM warned that players would fail more in Hardcore Mode.

“For those of us here at ZA/UM, who’ve already spent hundreds of hours playing, this new mode has been a wonderful chance to revisit the game in a fresh way,” the studio said.

How long is ‘Disco Elysium: The Final Cut’?

Even before The Final Cut, ZA/UM teased that Disco Elysium would take several hours to complete. As PCGamer reported, game designer Robert Kurvitz called it a “colossal” game with up to 90 hours worth of content.

Disco Elysium is, in every sense of the word, a huge game,” Kurvitz revealed. “It takes 60+ hours of continuous playtime to finish Disco Elysium if you’re a reasonably completionist player, as I am. It takes 90 hours if you’re absolutely savoring every detail. And 30 hours if you’re rushing it. Back-of-the-box, I would put playtime at 60+ hours.”

Even the dialogue is hefty, as Kurvitz said the studio included “one million words” in the game. It also contains more than 100 tasks and hundreds of skill checks.

Of course, ZA/UM might have exaggerated a bit, and how long Disco Elysium takes really depends on players. According to polls on HowLongToBeat, the game has taken many players closer to 40 hours to finish.

The RPG arrives on Nintendo Switch on Oct. 12

During the Nintendo Direct on Sept. 23, ZA/UM unveiled a trailer for Disco Elysium: The Final Cut and announced a Switch release date of Oct. 12. This version might not look exactly like The Final Cut’s original release, though. As ZA/UM’s Siim Raidma told USA Today’s For The Win, the studio took the new console as an opportunity to update the game.

“[It’s] a great opportunity for us to rework basically most of the game for a second time,” Raidma said, later adding that Disco Elysium “hasn’t been as smooth running as it is now.”

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Mac, and Google Stadia. It will launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on Oct. 12.
