Disney Adds ‘Avatar’ to List of Movies Available on Disney Plus at its Launch Date
With Disney Plus only a few days away, the company is still announcing movies to be available at its launch date. One of the most recently announced films housed on this streaming platform is Avatar, James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster. Does Disney own Avatar? What else will be available on this streaming platform? Here’s what we know about Disney Plus and its Day-One Library.
Disney Plus launches in the United States on Nov. 12, 2019
The wait is almost over for Disney fans worldwide. The company’s subscription service, Disney Plus, launches on Nov. 12, 2019. There, fans can stream some of their favorite movies, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Frozen. Separate from Netflix, this platform will house content created and owned by Disney, meaning that thousands of hours of content will be available for viewers to binge-watch.
“What differentiates Disney+ from the other streamers is our catalog of brands, especially after the Fox acquisition. We have Nat Geo, Pixar, Marvel, Disney, and Lucasfilms/Star Wars, and the I.P. that exists across all of those brands is going to be on the service for people to enjoy,” said Disney Plus Executive, Ricky Strauss, during an interview with Vanity Fair. One film that will appear on the streaming platform at its launch date is James Cameron’s 2009 release, Avatar.
Does Disney own ‘Avatar’?
This film earned nine Oscar nominations and billions of dollars in box-office sales. Does Disney own Avatar? In 2011, Disney entered an exclusive, long-term licensing agreement with 20th Century Fox, giving them the rights to films like X-Men and Avatar and television shows like The Simpsons. Of course, Disney took advantage of Avatar’s success, using their worldwide theme park rights to create Pandora.
In 2017, Disney opened “Pandora: The World of Avatar” at Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Complete with immersive ride experiences and floating rocks, this world puts guests in the middle of all the action. However, Disney’s involvement with this film doesn’t stop there. According to a clip featuring James Cameron, production on the Avatar sequel has already begun. Until its premiere, fans can watch the original Avatar on the streaming platform, Disney Plus.
‘Avatar’ is listed among Disney Plus’ ‘Day-One Library’
Recently, Disney announced that James Cameron’s Avatar will be available on their subscription service at its launch date. According to Variety, “Disney Plus will be the exclusive subscription streaming home of the film, which will be marking the 10th anniversary of its theatrical release on Dec. 18.”
This film is also the second-highest “worldwide grosser” of all time, trailing right behind Avengers: Endgame. Additionally, the Marvel blockbuster will be available for streaming on Disney Plus, beginning in December 2019. Movies produced by other studios, including Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and National Geographic will also be available for binge-watching on this streaming platform.
