Could Disney and Disney+ Make a Spinoff of ‘The Greatest Showman’? Fans Look Forward to a Stage Adaptation of the Musical
There are plenty of musical-related spinoffs on Disney’s streaming platform. With 21st Century Fox’s The Greatest Showman now in the Disney+ library, some fans are wondering whether a spinoff featuring Zendaya and Zac Efron is in the works. (The two actors even sing for Disney Channel in the past.)
‘The Greatest Showman’ is available for streaming on Disney’s subscription service
Originally released in theaters during 2017, The Greatest Showman tells the story of one man and his vision for a circus featuring “human oddities.” This eventually becomes a popular show and a home for some of the misfits, proving that differences should be celebrated instead of criticized.
This movie joined the streaming platform on August 14, just a few weeks after the Disney+ premiere of Hamilton, a live stage production which featured the original cast members in their starring roles. The Greatest Showman itself features a few iconic and award-winning songs, like “Rewrite the Stars” and “This is Me.”
In fact, some expect this movie musical to eventually make its way to the Broadway stage, as it was in talks to be a Broadway show only a few months after its theatrical release. Of course, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, most live performances have been postponed until at least 2021.
Will there be a spinoff of ‘The Greatest Showman’?
Because of Disney’s relationship with 21st Century Fox, a The Greatest Showman spinoff isn’t out of the question. However, nothing has been confirmed by the studio regarding future movies or shows featuring Anne Wheeler, Phillip Carlyle, or P. T. Barnum.
Disney is already making television shows based on their original movies and musicals. For the Disney+ exclusive High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the cast puts on their own version of shows like High School Musical and, for season two, Beauty and the Beast.
Some fans hope for more content featuring these characters
Although there’s no word regarding a Disney-related spinoff of The Greatest Showman, some fans shared their ideas for future content. Others shared their excitement that this movie is finally available on Disney’s streaming platform.
One Twitter user noted that because Disney owns both the X-Men movies and The Greatest Showman, there could even be a crossover featuring two of Hugh Jackman’s characters.
There are already some movies on Disney’s streaming service that feature these actors. Zac Efron stars in multiple Disney Channel original movies, like High School Musical. He even sings during some of those productions.
Additionally, there are plenty of Disney Channel movies and television shows featuring Zendaya, including Zapped, Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up, and K.C. Undercover available for binge-watching on this platform. To learn more about Disney+ and to subscribe, visit their website.
