The stars of Disney on Broadway reunited for ABC’s ‘Disney Family Singalong’
Be their guest, again. Disney debuted its second Family Singalong on the television network, ABC, complete with plenty of shoutouts for Mother’s Day. The special included performances from Disney movie cast members and actors from their stage productions.
Disney on Broadway stars, Merle Dandridge, Heather Headley, Adam Jacobs, Caissie Levy, Kara Lindsay, Kevin Massey, and Josh Strickland performed a special Mother’s Day tribute — the song “You’ll Be In My Heart.”
Broadway legends Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and Idina Menzel (Wicked) performed a duet of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World,” earning praise from Broadway fans across the globe. The same evening, Idina Menzel’s Frozen 2 co-star, Josh Gad, performed “When I’m Older.”
Other performers included Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, John Legend, and Jenifer Hudson
Whether you’re a musical theater fan or just a Disney fan, the night included plenty of memorable performances. Some of the most iconic included Halsey singing “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, spotting bright red hair.
Cast members from the live-action adaptation of The Lion King reunited to perform a quarantine version of “Hakuna Matata.” That includes Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, and Billy Eichner, in addition to the Broadway actor who portrays Young Simba.
Keke Palmer and the pros of Dancing the Stars, (Lindsay Arnold, Alan Bersten, Witney Carson, Val Chmerkovskiy, Jenna Johnson, Sasha Farber, and Emma Slater,) did their rendition of “Zero to Hero.” Of course, there were special appearances from the legendary Muppets and even a special kiss for frontline workers from Miss Piggy.
This was a special Mother’s Day-themed version of the ‘Disney Family Singalong’
This wasn’t the Disney Family Singalong singable broadcast on ABC. A few weeks prior, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and other celebrities appeared to wish viewers well during this time of social distancing. According to The Wrap, the first special had over 10 million viewers.
“‘The Disney Family Singalong’ was a beautiful event that united millions of households across the country, filling our hearts with joy and song, and also providing much-needed nourishment to fill the bellies of our neighbors facing hunger,” Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America, said in a statement.
“An incredible collaborator for nearly a decade, The Walt Disney Company has provided grant funding for network food banks, developed public service announcements, and mobilized the public to help provide the equivalent of almost 100 million meals to children and families,” the statement continues. “We cannot thank Disney enough for their enduring support.”
The first Disney Family Singalong is available on Disney’s streaming platform, as are the movies with the songs performed during this music special. According to The Wrap, this second Disney Family Singalong will be available for streaming at a later date.
