‘Doctor Strange 2’: Fans Discover Surprising Connections Between the New Trailer and ‘What If…?’
The multiverse has been torn open, and nothing will ever be the same in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All bets are off in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, and many fans are excited for what the video teases. From Easter eggs to cameos from past Marvel stars, the MCU is about to get wild. Plus, fans noticed a few links between the Doctor Strange sequel and the Disney+ series What If…?
A couple of Marvel Zombies are in the ‘Doctor Strange 2’ trailer
Almost every episode of What If…? Season 1 highlighted a different universe. And in episode 5, fans saw what would’ve happened if zombies infiltrated the Marvel world. Many superheroes we know and love fell victim to the zombie virus in “What If… Zombies?!” including Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch.
The Doctor Strange 2 trailer features the live-action debut of Zombie Doctor Strange and Zombie Scarlet Witch. It’s unclear if these versions will be from the same universe as the What If…? one, but it’s still an interesting connection between the animated series and the movie.
The video also showed other Doctor Strange variants, including Strange Supreme from What If…? Season 1 Episode 4. So it stands to reason that many other characters from the Marvel Disney+ series could appear.
Executive Producer Brad Winderbaum told Deadline in Aug. 2021, “I think that, without going into great detail, I can tell you that What If…? as a project, as a story that exists in the MCU, is as important as any other and is woven into that tapestry.” So, although some may write What If…? off as a fun project, it could impact the live-action movies.
Fans caught another connection between the ‘Doctor Strange 2’ trailer and ‘What If…?’
Not only does the trailer for the Doctor Strange sequel feature a connection to What If…? via zombies, but fans discovered another link between the two works.
In the video that aired during Super Bowl 2022, Wanda is seen in a familiar dimension in her Scarlet Witch costume. It looks exactly like the place where the Watcher observes the happenings of the multiverse in What If…?
Perhaps the Watcher will also make his live-action debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, given that Wanda might be in his living quarters in the trailer.
Many fans hypothesized that Wanda would become a villain in the Doctor Strange sequel. And the fact that she might travel to where the Watcher keeps track of the multiverse is worrisome. But fans will have to wait until the MCU film premieres to see if any of their theories come true.
Fans expect an endless amount of cameos in the ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel
Aside from the connections between the Doctor Strange 2 trailer and What If…?, the video previews multiple teases of what’s to come in the movie.
Although Marvel has yet to confirm it, many fans believe they hear Patrick Stewart’s voice as Professor X in the trailer. And some think they spotted Reed Richards in the scene where Stephen Strange approaches a panel that may be the Illuminati from Marvel Comics.
Elsewhere, a glowing superpowered individual fights Scarlet Witch. It’s difficult to see who exactly it is, but fans have theorized that it could be a Captain Marvel variant or Superior Iron Man.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres exclusively in theaters on May 6.
