‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Trailer Revealed 3 New Characters to Debut in the MCU
Marvel dropped a new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer stuffed with Easter eggs and hidden details. In addition to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and confirmed newcomer America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), several other new faces will join the madness. Rumors have speculated everyone from the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man to the Patrick Stewart Professor X. Here are three confirmed heroes and Variants revealed in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer.
1: Fans suspect they spotted a Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel in the ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ trailer
While Brie Larson gave a somewhat polarizing performance in Captain Marvel, fans might see a What If…? version of the story where Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) turned into Captain Marvel.
In one of the several intense shots in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer, Wanda Maximoff fights a figure swelling with a golden light. Fans suspect this to be the Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel.
This would line up with the comics well. While the ‘Sacred Timeline’ Monica Rambeau, aka Spectrum, got some fancy new powers in WandaVision, the character in Marvel Comics did become Captain Marvel for a time, starting in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16.
Hilariously, the issue starts with Peter Parker trying to save Monica from a mugging. However, he accidentally surprises her, and she knocks him out. If the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man rumors turn out true, it could make for a funny callback to the comics.
2: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange has several Variants sprinkled through the trailer
Thanks to Loki introducing the idea of multiple versions of the same characters, called ‘Variants,’ the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer looks to double down on that.
In addition to the main Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch will play at least three Variant Doctor Strange heroes and villains.
In one shot, fans saw a creepy, decaying version of Cumberbatch’s hero, likely being a version of the What If…? Zombie Doctor Strange. And he might turn out to be a major antagonist, as it seems he draws power from the Darkhold.
What If…? Supreme Strange also makes another appearance with his already iconic line that “things just got out of hand.”
Finally, the most prominent look at a new Doctor Strange Variant was Defender Strange. He appeared for a split second in the first Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. As the name implies, he joined a superhero team called The Defenders, though not the same one with Luck Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Daredevil.
3: Rintrah, a minotaur sorcerer appeared in the Marvel trailer
Even in a crowd of sorcerers at Kamar Taj, a giant green minotaur tends to stand out. This green minotaur is called Rintrah, and he has a very long history in Marvel Comics.
As dark clouds swirled over a group of sorcerers in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, Rintrah stood looking out at the impending threat.
He first appeared in Doctor Strange #80 in 1986. He helped Doctor Strange when he was injured and used his astral form.
Fans already knew Benedict Cumberbatch’s next adventure would be massive, even bigger than Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer proved that it’s even bigger than we expected. You can catch all these new characters and Variants on May 6, 2022.
