Bryce Harper is one of the most famous baseball players currently in the league. He recently made headlines when he signed a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Now, Harper is making headlines again — but this time, it’s not about baseball. Harper just announced that he and his wife, Kayla Varner, are having a baby. Does Harper have any kids already?
Harper and Varner were married in 2016
Harper and his wife, Kayla Varner, had a bit of a rocky relationship before they actually tied the knot. The couple reportedly started dating in 2012, after Harper was already playing in the MLB, but he has previously referred to Varner as his high school sweetheart, so it’s unclear if they had been in a relationship growing up. In 2014, Harper proposed to Varner, and a wedding was set for January 2015. However, things went south between the two for unknown reasons, and they called off their engagement. But they clearly were meant to be together, and they rekindled the romance in July 2016 and were married in December 2016.
The couple honored Varner’s strict religion on their wedding day
Varner was raised Mormon, and the two decided to honor Varner’s religion during their wedding. They got married in California and wed at the San Diego Mormon Temple. It was pouring rain, but Harper posted a heartfelt photo of him and his new wife, and didn’t seem to mind the downpour. “A year ago I married my high school sweetheart in the pouring rain. I love you more and more each day I get to be with you,” the caption read. Since then, everyone has been wondering when the couple would have a baby.
Harper announced on Monday that he and Varner are expecting their first child
Harper is going to be a father for the first time. The couple doesn’t have any children — yet. On April 1, Harper posted a photo on Instagram announcing that he and Varner were having a baby. “Philly raised little man will be!” the caption read. Harper also posted a photo of a Phillies baseball jacket with the baby boy’s sonogram on top. The Phillies’ Instagram account commented on the post to congratulate the couple, as well as the Philadelphia Eagles and several other celebrities and athletes. Harper did not specify when the baby is due.
Children played a role in Harper’s decision on signing with a new team
Harper and Varner knew they wanted to have kids, and when Harper was looking to sign with a new team, children definitely played into where he ended up. He and his wife factored in things such as neighborhoods and hospitals when deciding where Harper should play. It seemed like ages before Harper finally announced he had signed with the Phillies, and in an interview, Varner said the decision made both of them think about where they wanted their kids to grow up, where the best hospitals were, and more. Now, it makes sense why they were so concerned with those things — it turns out they already had a baby on the way during the interview.
