Dolly Parton is a singer, a songwriter, an actor, an author, and loves the holidays. She keeps quite a few Christmas traditions as she really enjoys celebrating during the festive season. But when New Year’s rolls around there’s one tradition a lot of people have that Parton doesn’t.

How Parton celebrates the Christmas holiday

Parton has stated that some of her Christmas traditions include eating pizza and making cookies.

“I don’t have kids of my own, but I invite all the children in the family around to my house in the run-up to Christmas,” she said via U.K.’s Red Online. “They come at noon and stay the night, until noon the next day. I get a few of my friends to come and help with the littler kids, and we eat pizza and make cookies.”

When it comes to presents Parton says she usually gives her husband, Carl Dean, new tools he can use to repair small projects around the house. In addition, she sometimes writes a song for him on Christmas morning. As for what Dean gets the “Jolene” songbird, it’s things she needs such as aprons or oven mitts. And her absolute favorite present from her hubby is a card with a sweet poem.

The reason Parton doesn’t make New Year’s resolutions

When the clock strikes midnight on December 31 many people usher in the start of a new year with a specific resolution, but not Parton.

“It’s always the same thing: I’m gonna exercise more this year, I’m gonna eat better. And that lasts for a couple of weeks, and then I’m right back where I started,” Parton revealed (per The Boot). “So I don’t make ’em ’cause I always break ’em.”

But just because she isn’t vowing to exercise more each year does not mean the country music star doesn’t stay active. “I like being busy, and I get energized by doing everything … I really don’t think about my age. If my health holds up, I’ll still be doing this at 95, if I live that long.”

Along with more exercise, another popular New Year’s resolution people commit to is altering their sleeping habits to get plenty of rest. However, getting a full eight hours of sleep isn’t something Parton does.

“I only sleep for three hours at a time before I get up and do other stuff,” she said, before adding that her trick to staying energetic throughout the day is “a cat nap.”

The singer usually wakes up at 3 a.m. every day

Parton also previously revealed that she’s a very early riser.

In 2020, the “9 to 5” artist did an interview with RuPaul Charles for Marie Claire and elaborated on how much sleep she gets.

“I don’t require a lot of sleep,” she told the RuPaul’s Drag Race host. “Three to five hours I can work on. Five hours I like to get. But usually, I’m between three and five … if I’m on the job, I’ll take a little power nap … I’m always, almost always up for good around 3 a.m.”
